Always wanted to visit Memphis and just kill about humming Elvis songs and being dead nice to southern belles.

Belles.
My mates and I decided we’d walk from central Memphis to the Stax Museum, halfway there we were walking past a housing estate (for want of a better expression) and one of the firefighters came out of the station and wouldn’t let us walk any further. “We saw you guys walking and couldn’t let you carry on , you were in danger of being shot” , he took us to the station where he showed us the bullet holes in the walls and called us a taxi. I think @RAFUH has got a point.

Yep. That's Memphis

Went to Memphis once. My Airbnb host was actually surprised I was simply there to visit because in her words they had "nothing to see". The city is pretty rough and I also had my wallet stolen by a homeless man on Beale St.

It's the only city so far that I wouldn't care to return to.

More questions from me , I realise Texas is huge but it’s in your username name :). I’m staying on Congress ave in Austin and probably by Union Station in Dallas ,do you know if there are any ares around there to avoid ?.

I'm actually from Dallas! Union Station is right in the middle of downtown. During the day it wont be an issue at all as it's a popular area, and even early in the evening you'll be fine. I'd just try to avoid walking around the downtown area super late at night. The areas to avoid are mostly south of downtown though, specifically around the Oak Cliff district. Deep Ellum is also a popular area to visit but there's been a bit of an uptick in crime lately. I still go there all the time though and don't ever have issues so there's my anecdotal take 😅

I absolutely love Austin, and if you're on congress street you'll be just fine. More people walk around Austin compared to most other cities here so there'll be plenty to do close to where you're at regardless of which side of the river you'll be on.

In general this is a 'use your eyes' thing. If you see a church with metal detectors at the door, turn around and retrace your steps. That sort of thing.

Crime maps help, if you don't know the city well. "Do it during the day" is rule #1 if the area is questionable. You can walk Upper Wacker in Chicago at midnight, and I've done it without incident, but I wouldn't make a habit of it.

As for Austin, my one big tip would be this: if you want to cross I-35 to get to stuff like Franklin Barbecue and Micklethwait, do it in a vehicle.
