In general this is a 'use your eyes' thing. If you see a church with metal detectors at the door, turn around and retrace your steps. That sort of thing.

Crime maps help, if you don't know the city well. "Do it during the day" is rule #1 if the area is questionable. You can walk Upper Wacker in Chicago at midnight, and I've done it without incident, but I wouldn't make a habit of it.

As for Austin, my one big tip would be this: if you want to cross I-35 to get to stuff like Franklin Barbecue and Micklethwait, do it in a vehicle.
We’re starting the trip in Chicago , I was thinking of staying north of the river other than maybe going to see The Bean and Buddy Guy’s club

More questions from me , I realise Texas is huge but it’s in your username name :). I’m staying on Congress ave in Austin and probably by Union Station in Dallas ,do you know if there are any ares around there to avoid ?.
Been too Austin twice, the brother lived there for a few years. 6th street was lively and it had more characters hanging around when you get past the bars in dirty 6th but had no issues.

Few places dowtown i would recommend are:
Terry Blacks for bbq (Also Salt Lick but i didn't get to try there)
Home Slice pizza on South Congress
Torchys for some tacos(Aware there is probably better food trucks)
3 forks steakhouse

And head to Rainey streets for a few drinks, i enjoyed Bangers, lots of choice.

You'll be fine in River North or south of the river in "downtown". I just came back from a weekend there and had zero issues
Yeah, as long as you don't get too far past the south end of the Loop, you should not have problems. I wouldn't wander around the Loop for extended periods on the wrong side of midnight, but getting from parking or entertainment to a hotel is fine. The south end of the Loop still had some rough patches, not all that long ago.

The thing about Upper Wacker is that it clears out late at night, which is not what you want. In that story, I hoofed it back from Union Station to River North after dropping off a rental car. Figured the walk was probably safer than the L, at that hour.

Austin is very walkable around Congress and there are tons of things to do. BBQ try Blacks or Terry Blacks (related but not the same.) I love Fixe but it is $$$. My favorite bar there is called Morte Subite and only sells Belgian beer. Then of course there is 6th street.

That was just around the corner from where i stayed on my first visit. We went for sightseeing walk downtown and a storm started so we ended up in there all day. Ended up messy with the amount of high percentage alcohol consumed.

And i was trying to remember the Sourthern restuarant we went to and googled Fixe and that was it. Food was amazing.

Hunt explained to panel today that compensation for victims and families is likely restricted because of the nature of the countries finances. I can't find the video yet, but I will.

Blood diseases inflicted on British victims forcibly taken from individuals imprisoned and forced to don ate from American prisons.

I'd declare war.
