I didn't say it served no purpose. His form doesn't warrant a starting place. Benching him sends a message to him and the others, it obviously serves a purpose. What doesn't benefit him or the team is then refusing to put him on the pitch no matter what happens in the game. If we are cruising (unlikely I know) he gets the opportunity to play with out pressure; if we're losing he has it in him to produce a moment of brilliance, if someone gets injured in the area he plays in, why disrupt the shape and system by refusing to put him on? If someone is having a stinker, what message does it send by leaving them on (exactly what I was screaming at RM about Barkley in the last few games) and to him sitting on the bench? These are all reasons why it makes no sense to refuse to consider putting him on - which is what you suggested.

As for thinking of loss of form as being like an injury - it just isn't. With an injury you cannot train and any return should be gradual because of this and to prevent reoccurance.
But if your point is that you're benching him to send him a message. Then what message are you sending him that once you're losing you bring him on?

If I was the player I would think you where weak and I'm more important than you.

I wouldn't allow a situation where I needed to bring him on due to injury and I don't think Martinez has. Gibson, Oviedo and Kone are on the bench which covers where he plays.

I think you're putting one player's needs ahead of the teams to be honest.

Lukaku plays crap today. Drop him out of the squad?

Baines plays crap today. Drop him out of the squad?

Coleman and so on and so on.

Either way Barkley is on the bench. Probably best to deal with it mate.

If he doesn't do the business today the next player to drop is Lukaku

Rom has been one of our better players. He was never going to be great against West Brom since we know he has an issue with teams that park the bus. We have a problem with teams that park the bus. Ultimately you need a bit of guile in those games but that's not Rom's fault.

I would think that I was being given an opportunity to show that I'm worthy of a starting place next time. I don't think we'd be allowed to put three players on to cover Barkley.
