Sad that it's ended this way for him.
Saw him 3 times tour of Britain last year. If he was French (and lived in France) he'd be a superstar.34 stage wins. One hell of a career. Even more so considering he's been unlucky with ill health, crashes and scandalously (imo) not being picked in recent years. I'm heading over to watch a couple of stages next week, gutted not to be able to cheer him on.
He's still competitive and 12 months down the line you'd imagine he still will be. Even if he comes back and doesn't win a stage, it would be nice to see him finish another tour and have his moment on the Champs Elysees. If anyone was going to hold off retirement for another year it would be him.Doubt he will retire after that, he will be back in 2024.
Looking forward to Puy de Dome.
Crashing out sucks and taking Philipsen to the line at the age of 38 is amazing, so he'll feel like he needs to put things right. But I can see him calling time tbh - he has five young kids, he is the greatest sprinter ever and he doesn't need to break the Merckx record to validate that, Astana are really bad etc. He's still competitive and 12 months down the line you'd imagine he still will be. Philipsen clearly the Boss right now. Heard that Jakobsen has pulled out today and has not started the stage. He's rated slightly faster than Philipsen in a pure test of speed but he hasn't been able to make anything happen this Tour, whereas Philipsen is winning for fun. Doesn't seem like Jakobesen is quite on the same page as his lead out man Morkov (which would be a Jakobsen problem).Philipsen again!
Without VdP leadout. Seems he's sick with respitory problem.
Let's hope it's not covid.
