Cycling thread

Nails ride from vdP and clearly the strong man of the day - one of the best races I've seen for a long time, like a tarmac cross race.

Hard lines for Wout with another second place to add to the list, but don't think he can have too many complaints. Wasn't a question of tactics or strategy on a course like that - vdP has always been the more explosive rider and no one could follow when it mattered.
Pog looked absolutely rinsed in the closing stages so did very well to sneak past Pedersen onto the podium.

Hope Wout goes well in the TT later this week, Friday I think.

Road race dominated the WC events yesterday, but Ganna threw down a mental last two laps to beat Dan Bigham in the 4k pursuit. He was behind by miles (in pursuit terms) at halfway but took it by 0.05 secs.
Bigham is an amazing rider himself - nowhere near the talent of a WT rider like Ganna, but he is the supreme aerodynamicist.

2 seconds in 750m, against a flat out Bigham. Superhuman, guessin he'd had his weetabix.

Wout van Aert will ride the Tour of Britain - good news for the event. Starts next weekend in and around Manchester, then stage 2 from Wrexham.
Strange route choice on day 2, they're just arsing around Cheshire when Wales would be more interesting, but road closures are very challenging to arrange in this country.

Stage two is very disappointing. I ride a lot around those parts and there's nothing of interest on the route apart from Beeston Castle. Wrexham are meant to be showcasing their own county and immediate countrisde (even if sone of it is in Denbighshire and Flintshire).

Apparently Denbighshire weren't interested so this is the course they've stuck with. When it was first announced Wrexham were hosting I had planned on taking half the day off to watch it, but now I might not bother.

It does seem like the route is largely driven by who wants to pay for it rather than where would make good racing.

Vuelta off to a rain drenched start.
Loads of crashes let's hope there won't be any premature retirements to spoil the race.
Into the mountains tomorrow.

I'll be giving the Angliru a go tomorrow. Quietly bricking it.
Alto de L'Angliru is a steep mountain road in Asturias, near La Vega-Riosa, in northern Spain. It is considered one of the most demanding climbs in professional road bicycle racing and is often used in the Vuelta a España stage race.

Just south of (our very own Bryan) Oviedo. Oviedo is the capital city of the Principality of Asturias in northern Spain.
