Cycling thread

Can't see anyone other than Phillipsen winning the gallop on the Champs today.
Hope I'm wrong though.
Hat is off to anyone who picked Jordi Meeus for today - talk about an outside bet. Good for him though, disrupting the usual sprint hegemony. Phillipsen seemed perfectly placed but just delayed coming off vdP's wheel - guess the legs weren't quite there today when it mattered.

Great Tour imho, captivating GC battle for 2 weeks until Vingegaard was decisive. JV at Team JV seems absolutely unbeatable right about now but that's been said many times over the years about various riders.

Jonas apparently has said to a Danish journalist that he will ride the Vuelta, but hasn't been confirmed more widely.

French open (tennis has been moved permanent) so Wimbledon moved permanent also, had the knock on over significant overlap with the tour, then the powers that be tried to squeeze 5 tests into 6 weeks, to allow for a load of hundred cricket, the leagues back (football actually starts proper this weekend) and the PL in 10 days. Rugby league has to wrap up with challenge cup, Union world cup in France end of September, to many sporting events, not enough European summer to share it all in. Imagine if they'd tried to squeeze Joshua Fury into a weekend somewhere, Benn jnr Eubank jnr. When's the tour of Britain? World indoor cycling? Last year saw Euro swimming in Italy alongside euro athletics championships in Germany at the same time.

Doesn't suprise me thesedays unfortunately.

Is there a reason why the world's have been brought forward a month or so? Feels a bit weird having them now.
I think it's due to it being the omni-world champ festival with nearly all disciplines contesting the stripes - road, track, mountain. It's not normally run like that.
I'm on holiday or I'd go up and watch the MTBing for sure - it's at Glentress which is a superb place to ride. vdP and Pidcock both going at it - obv head and shoulders stronger than the field but going in with very few dirt miles under the belt this year. A bad gridding killed Pidcock last world champs he contested, had to ride past 30 blokes on a narrow track.

Hattie Harnden is racing downhill MTB for the UK up in Fort William - she won the national champs the other week. People rightly celebrate vdP, TP etc for their skills and versatility but Harnden is on another level - national champ at cyclocross, cross country MTB, and DH. Also won enduro world series races. That's like a throw back to the dawn of the sport in the 1980s, almost no one can do that nowadays as DH is out on a limb in terms of the skills required.

World road champ race on tomorrow.
Hope the storm has blown over by then.
I fancy the Belgians and Philipsen in particular.
Didn't Cav win the UK championship on a course round Glasgow some time ago.

He did win in Glasgow about 10 years back. Not sure a sprinter will get round the final circuit at the sharp end - it's like a crit but with some nasty short climbs, very surgey, off/on. Philipsen was imperious at the Tour so he certainly has a chance.
MvdP would be fav on the course profile imho and doesn't have the circus of Belgian politics to worry about. Had a quiet Tour but was ill.

Weather is meant to be ok-ish, but showers will make the street circuit more difficult.
