I played rugby to a pretty high level in NZ. I was a bit injury prone (hamstrings) up until about age 26 whereupon the injuries almost miraculously stopped. Gibbo might experience similar fortune...

...and yes, I know, it's the optimism that kills you

I wonder if Lukaku and Lennon/Mirallas would benefit from Gibbo playing instead of Barry. We've seen Lukaku only really makes the runs when Barry gets it but yesterday Gibbo showed he was capable of picking out the runs from further back in the play, as a striker who likes to run early to get in behind that's exactly what you want, someone who will at least see it and assess if it's on.

No doubt Gibbo brought an element yesterday, but Lukaku and Atsu also made them selves available in better areas, and we just rained runs off of that. Naismith also then made some nice passes off of hold up play.
All in all, we can't discount that after Gibson entered, all that opened up and we had not seen it before his entry. Though I believe Atsu was subbed on at the same time, so he could have been helping there as well. The problem is that there is now a glut of DM worthy of time and I can't wrap my head around which one I would want to see less of so that Gibson could get more time.
At any rate Young Boys return should let us get him out there.

i know that's what everyone wants to go to, but he too was REALLY good as recently as what 12-18 months ago at worst? If Barry is out, McCarthy's role changes as Gibson needs more freedom. Besic is best equipped to bring what Barry brings, but he is a work in progress going forward, and I would argue a little worse than even Barry at passing. But he is faster and up for the fight.

At any rate, even if I settle on taking Barry out so that Gibson- and that dynamic attack start we saw yesterday and that had been missing- can see the field, i would still need to decide if I want McCarthy's all around game over Besic's destroying ability. That's all I'm saying.

Sure we will see Barry on Thursday though, maybe even with the arm band on.

Any of them, Peter.

If fit and on form he is way better than both McCarthy and Besic.

Barry at his peak may have been the equal of Gibson but as things stand now I would deffo have Gibson over him.

In the unlikely event of Darron staying sound, he will become the first name on the teamsheet IMO.

That's fair enough, personally I'd play Besic and tell him to just hold his position and give it to Gibson. His pace and energy are invaluable at times for covering when the full backs push on. Barry is never able to do this and just fouls people if he can get close. We're a far more open side to counter against when Besic doesn't play. As good as McCarthy was last season, I've not seen anything this season to suggest he warrants a starting place. If he can get up to speed then great, but at the minute even if he;s been injured Gibson moves the ball so much quicker than any of the other midfielders and it's that movement of the ball which sees us playing our best football.

Barry and Gibson as a two in the Premier League is suicide, both are criminally slow. Its one or the other. Wouldn't mind giving McCarthy and Gibson a go for the next few games.

It's like signing a new player... if he stays fit
and up to now he's done more in half a game than barkley has all season. who needs to on the bench or something to get his head right.
But if hes sat on the bench next to Martinez, the main cause of his head being wrong, that's not going to happen

Gibson as number 10 is an intriguing idea given his aptitude for through balls and shots from distance, but I want Barkley to make that role his. There are already enough road blocks in his way as it is (i.e. the annoyingly effective Steven Naismith!).
