David Moyes - Taking a knife to a gunfight at West Ham, Part 2

Moyes and Lage both floundering when it comes to the finish line.

I see Potter is getting plaudits again now he’s winning. Bielsa has gone. Nuno couldn’t break in at Wolves.

Managers will come and go from these clubs but the one constant remains the same, they can’t get top 4, and they don’t often win domestic cups. A manager can do a great job at a club and if he has a season with a few injuries and bad refereeing then he’s out of a job 6 months later.

No amount of managerial talent, clever recruitment, cutting edge training/data/science, productive academies can triumph over City Liverpool Chelsea United Arsenal and Spurs throwing 100s of millions around and getting favourable refereeing decisions.

Instead of recognising this fans instead call him dithering Dave, or that Rodgers bottled it twice, or that Bielsa got found out, or some other excuse instead of just admitting that none of these managers no matter how good they are have the slightest chance of dining at the top table.

Spot on mate.

Football is dead.

Agreed, people will point at Leicester but they are an anomaly which has to and does happen every blue moon. I think this is a detriment to the sport in general and I foresee domestic attendances and viewership dwindling in the coming years because let’s be honest, it’s just a bit boring now isn’t it?

Oh look Man City who’ve just spent £100m on two centrehalves and have monopolised the youth level have just turned my team over again…yawn.

The Leeds game was testament to that prevailing feeling. There’s a team fighting for its life at home, actually playing quite well for lots of it, and it gets turned over by a City B team fresh off the back of a mid week European game. Didn’t even need to bring De Bruyne off the bench and could get most of the few main players who had played off the pitch after 60 mins. That’s demoralising for any set of fans and no wonder they had nothing better to do than lob paper balls onto the pitch.

The problem is that dissent will never foster for long enough because the teams outside the top 6 are so poor that they’re never far off a relegation scrap. If Leicester had Rodgers poached, Vardy retired, then they had an injury crisis, they’d easily be bottom half with their fans worrying about relegation. The PL just hope that each club in turn gets distracted enough by relegation that they don’t realise they can never get access to the top table. Maybe a few seasons of West Ham and Newcastle not making it will finally get some of their fans annoyed to see through the fog.

The problem is though that a load of fans don’t care they won’t ever win anything again if they can watch the football on BY and Sky and get their bets on. It’s become entertainment now, not a competitive game.
