2024/25 David Moyes

I was happy that he was so clearly very unhappy with how we played, and the general state of the club.

Because we have played worse than that this year and Dyche has seemed content or thought we did ok.

But yes, to hear him so down after less than a week, is maybe not a great sign.
Look Villa are a good side, tough start for any manager, even at home, next up is also a very good side, granted in very poor form and with a poo manager.

He needed to inject some energy and drive into the team on Wednesday night. He failed spectacularly. I’d have played 3-5-2. Played big 3 centre half’s, had Dixon & Harrison as wing backs. Played Mangala or Doucore with Gueye and Armstrong, play Beto with Ndiaye off him. We can argue about some of those personnel but he needed to make statement and have a go. Instead we got Dyche light and it all felt flat.
We so desperately need, more than anything, any modicum of pace in the side.

For that reason alone Dixon needs to be getting a look

It's both the manager and the players, it always has been.

I expect more goals under Moyes simply because he seemed to ignore the frailties of the team last night and tried to have a go.

I'd like to say I'd expect more goals against as well, but I'm not sure simply because that was Dyche's biggest failing this season imo. Putting aside we have a poor and inconsistent attack, this Dyche team was not doing Dyche things most of this season.

Having a go produced very little last night, however, which is down to the players.

We haven't been healthy which has definitely affected our results, agreed.

And the health thing has made a comparison from last season to this season misleading. On the flip side, these guys are old and breaking down, it shouldn't be a surprise. I also think expecting an aging squad to duplicate a performance, year over year, is folly. They're all a year older, which given many of their ages, the chance that their performance will fall off a cliff is much greater.
They look clueless when going forward, players not even looking to get a pass, except Ndiaye, too many standing there watching the game and not bothered too much to look for a pass.
I had to laugh with the way Doucoure presses the keeper. He stands 3 to 4 yards in front of him and throws a few shapes, and its pointless most of the time as the keeper has an easy pass left or right because no one else is on the same page and are not supporting him.

I think this will come against Spurs!

He literally had two training sessions before the game last night.

Il be amazed if Harrison and Doucoure start against Spurs or if they do it will be in a different set up.
There’s no reason he couldn’t pick a different team or formation even with 2 training sessions. We all know that team isn’t going to work for scoring goals. I’m sure he’s been watching us play for several weeks now.

Interesting how Moyes also mentioned the type of money and recruitment Villa have had over the last few years too.

Wasn't long ago they were on their arse. People think it was all Emery - let's have it right, they've also spent an absolute fortune.
Good point and while I do think Emery is clearly a good manager, I think it helped that he replaced Gerrard, who clearly wasn’t. He had that team hovering around the drop zone going into November if memory serves, while barring a few signings since, it wasn’t too dissimilar a squad to what they have now, or at least a squad that shouldn’t have been where they were when Gerrard was sacked

He needs one half decent striker to lift the gloom. Doesnt need to be top class. Just someone the rest of the team can think we've got someone who can slot a few.
We've currently got one who couldnt hit a barn door but also sends out the message he wants away. What an awful situation for everyone concerned.
Two weeks to find a striker and i think it will give everyone a lift.

Some good signs from that game. The ability of the players is absolutely terrible though, what should be simple passes turn into suicide balls because half the team can’t pass and trap a ball effectively.

Got flashbacks to "Senior Pro" Young and his hospital ball back to Pickford...well Ollie Watkins
