Good point although by the time most of the youngsters left , the damage might of already been done. A young players ( generally) most formative years are between 16-19. If they weren't being coached by the best available coaches with the best training methods, they may never reach their peak.
Dowell for example had the natural skills to be a top level flair player. I don't know for sure but if his other parts of his game weren't being worked on effectively, he didn't stand a chance.

Dowell has shown he is mentally weak. He can't even get a start for Norwich

Good luck to him. U-23s is basically the reserves though. It's the U18s where the potential talent is.

Very true but that is something that can be worked on if not fully addressed. Fergie had similar worries with a few of his players as did Clough and Taylor. I know some of their methods aren't ethical nowadays but their are suitable alternatives.
You're probably correct but I feel at least we could of had at least one extra player with different coaches and methods.

Jumped, or pushed?

Would not be surprised if its hte latter and out of respect they've let him put his spin on it.

Wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case, and if so the right thing to do for a loyal servant. It’s right he goes as we need a serious refresh at the academy but also right to frame it the way we have- realistically you don’t need to leave a job to seek another, but at the same time putting it in those terms puts his name out for other jobs.

I think your comment is a bit blinkered to be fair ,it would only be correct if Unsy is proven up to the job ,he could very well be the reason for the failure .Time will tell .

….if there’s a lack of players coming through, I doubt it’s down to what happens after they get their first professional contracts. When was the last time we got to the final or latter stages of the FA Youth Cup (U18 level)? I think it was probably Rooney’s team that lost to Villa.

That Villa team had a number of future top flight players, as did the West Ham team that beat us some time earlier. We won it with the likes of Osman, Hibbert, Cadamarteri etc. I even watched Jimmy Husband & John Hurst winning it in 1965.

The point I’m making is the FA Youth Cup has always been a strong indicator of talent, the fact we haven’t had a decent run suggests we have more of a recruitment than coaching issue. Even then, recruitment is so much more difficult because the talent pool is so much smaller. Kids don’t play from dawn till dusk like we did in the 60s and 70s.

The strategy of bringing in promising youngsters is reaping some reward; Stones, DCL, Holgate, Lookman, Nkounkou. Indeed, it was Unsworth who went to the Board and suggested they find monies to buy DCL.

Root and branch change might make a difference. if Unsworth is the start of that then fair enough but I very much doubt his departure alone will make much difference.

I watched a lot of the Norwich V Burley game last Sunday.
Kieran Dowell did alright but no better than that. Certainly not a player we would try to sign to make us better.

A change in the academy every few years is a good thing, it blows away the cobwebs and introduces new thinking.

I would guess David Unsworth realised changes were coming and decided to leave.

I wonder if this really is the beginning of the clear out following on from the much vaunted 'strategic review's of the club if so, I wonder who gets the job of telling Duncan that it's time to go. Of course, it may well be that Unsworth has had an offer of a managerial somewhere, perhaps at a club where the manager is still in his position. This really would be a good move on Unsworth's behalf, he has to try to prove himself as a number one at some stage.
