David Weir

Weir scored the first goal in a 2-0 win over Newcastle in May 2005, this was my first time to attend Goodison, Tim Cahill scored the 2nd then the next day Liverpool drew with Arsenal and this confirmed 4th and champions league qualifying.

I'm less an advocate of the DoF role than I was, and it doesn't suit Moyes as he is very much in the British manager rather than head coach mould.

I read that Weir's remit at Brighton is less than a full DoF and to me that tends to make more sense. Big decision making is driven by club owners and CEOs and I'll bet that is replicated across most clubs. It's the underlying support structures where a DoF can add value and make a mark.

Weir would seem to make for a good appointment but would just have to see. There has been too much that the club that has fallen flat and been underwhelming to come to any other conclusion.

Loved Dave Weir as a player. Proper footballer in a struggling team as I remember. Played in the right way.
Decent player , no complaints .
But I never took to him as a Captain.
One of the most non-descript captains I have witnessed for us .
He does appear to have done well at Brighton and would be a good appointment here on that basis .
But there is a an in depth structure at Brighton to support him whereas here we have …….well nothing really, apart from a gang of gormless yanks struggling to grasp the intricacies of soccerball .

I always felt his commitment and quality on the pitch set a good example, granted you are right that he could have been more vocal. The same thing could probably be leveled at Jagielka. I do thing both players represented the club well. We all see different qualities and shortfalls in all players I suppose. He was just a player I really liked watching.

Yeah , I didn’t mean to cast aspersions on his playing qualities or commitment, they were first class .
Just expect a bit more from a captain to make him a noteworthy one .
I have doubts he would leave Brighton to come to us anyway , purely because the structure to support him doesn’t exist here as yet .

I wasn’t disputing what you said mate so no had feelings there it’s just debate, in fact I agree with the fact he could have been more vocal as I think as a team we were a bit soft with referees at the time. He’s got a good number at Brighton so it would be a big step coming here in these circumstances.
