Discussion & help on depression & mental health related issues

That book I've recommended at the top of the page is all about this mate.

However it doesn't do it in a hippy dippy preachy " you must " way, it's all about accepting your faults as a human being and learning to be at peace with them.

It's also very very humorous and self deprecating.

By the sounds of it you'd enjoy it and take a lot from it ;)

Already ordered it from Amazon, despatched today, looking forward to reading it.

Personally I can recommend Don't Sweat the Small Stuff and Stop Thinking and Start Living.

I have an appointment on Thursday where I want to talk about my mental health but really don't know how to approach the topic. Knowing me, I'll want to shy out of it at the last second. Can anyone suggest a way to start talking about it?

Who's the appt with mate ?

If it's with a health care professional, they'll take the lead and walk you through it.

It'll be very informal and you'll be in a relaxed environment.

Once you've been the first time, you should walk out feeling like a weights been lifted ;)

Its a standard appointment with a GP. I just don't really know what to say or how to describe what I think and feel.

There's really nothing to worry about.

Your GP will ask you a bit about yourself and should ask you a set of standard questions or get you to fill in a tick box sheet, which is a very loose guideline as to where you are on the depressive scale ( can't remember the medical term for it)

From there he / she will decide the best course of treatment for you ( if any ) meds, cbt etc.

Remember if you're not happy with how you were dealt with, you can always ask to see another GP. ( my first was dreadful and the second was brilliant ).

Also the more honest you are, the more your GP will be able to help - be brutally honest is the best policy.

Your GP will take the lead mate, don't worry x

Good luck, mate!

Look at the new job as a great new opportunity.

Update us all on how it went.

Write down how you feel mate.
If you get there, and can't articulate it, then just pass the piece of paper over and tell them that's how you feel.

just do it mate. I did it four months ago and it has changed my life. I took my wife with me as she could see that I was struggling more than I could. I was s@@@ scared but it was fine. Felt like I'd had a massive weight taken off my shoulders when I left the surgery and now look forward to going for a chat with my doctor. My view on this condition has totally changed. Be honest and people will understand and help you. Good luck mate

Its a tough one as in my head even the Doctors are judging you, but they aren't they just want to know what level this is at. Writing a prescription for some meds and sending you off isnt good enough. This is 2017, talking should come first.

There's not many Doctors that will fob you off with just a script nowdays mate, as there's much more awareness and acceptance of depression and mental illness in general nowdays. Plus as much as you may have to wait a while nearly all urban areas have access to CBT and the likes.

If your GP Ian doing nothing expect writing scripts, I'd suggest that a change of GP would be in order.

I type it out in notes on my iphone and just try and read from them, bad days, good days just tell him you're here to talk and would it be ok for ' me to talk for a minute'.

I do find its very difficult to find a GP who is willing to
1. Listen
2. Act

If you explain that your are happy to just chat, they are usually a little more receptive. I know first hand what going the GP is like, i've spent half my life inside the NHS and whilst no disrespect to 90% of GP the rolex wearing private practises just want to churn you in and out with a prescription and a pat on the head, mental health needs care and attention, not a nod and a set of meds.

Take your time mate.
