I do the lady who usually does it, simply because she's a very nice woman who is a laugh but also can tell whenever you're not really in the mood for chit chat and just gets on with it.

If I get it done by someone else then I won't because I dont know them and they're just doing their job (unless they do a very good job). It's definitely not a rude thing if you don't.

My barber charges £20 which is a good round number. I’d feel awkward tipping him a few coins say £22-23 pound. That leaves me potentially adding another note to £25. I think this is just too much.

It annoys me when the person before me who is paying the same tips though, makes me feel a right tight arse..

Been going to the same guy for 33 years...verbally quotes me not much more than what he charged then (unless he's the cheapest barber in the U.S.) when I ask him what I owe him every time I'm there, so it's become a running joke. He's gotta' be in his mid 70's now...used to cut hair in the military (no, I don't rock a flat-top) in Alaska back in the 60's. Good guy but will absolutely talk your ear off if he's not busy. I'm 99.9% sure I pay him double+ whatever his rate is but he's not very expensive, comparatively. Even with the over-payment I can still get about 4 haircuts compared to one of whatever witch doctor she goes to.

Sadly, I've started to notice he's slowly been gettin' the shakes in his hands over the last year or so, so I don't know how much longer he'll carry on. It will be a sad day, indeed...good peeps.

Relative who owns a small salon has always done mine for free. In exchange, I regularly look after their dog when they visit their family in London.

Seeing as I do it all myself, I simply take a $10 bill from my left pocket and move it to the right pocket. That way, the stylist isn't pissed off and I can be assured of a perfect job the next time.
