2018/19 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Needs to play through the middle and get on the end of chances we create. Playing him wide exposes his weaknesses and he ends up giving the ball away too often.

Not sure how relevant the top speed stat is tbh, I'm sure there's a fair few players who would leave Messi for dead over 100m. Messi has the ability to reach full speed in a few yards and it's this that leaves players in his wake.

I always think you play your in form players and as DCL is scoring then he deserves a go through the middle. Wouldn't bomb Tosun out completely but maybe be giving DCL a go for the last half hour of the game against West Ham and take it from there based on performance.

It's not relevant at all. Players might get a chance to run the distance required to get to top speed once or twice a game. Quickness over a short distance and acceleration are more important and I don't think DCL excels as much with those traits. That said he is still a great athlete and can use his various abilities to trouble center backs but he isn't going to create chances out wide regularly.

And the point of being in those positions is if he can’t finish?

..well, just look at Raheem Sterling at City who’s finishing is woeful but his pace and willpower keeps getting him great positions. 16 league goals last season, even though he probably missed as many in sitters.

A key area for DCL to exploit is in the air. I don’t think he realises how dominant he is attacking crosses. I reckon he concentrates on winning the ball rather than directing it. He should take a leaf out of Andy Gray and Duncan Ferguson in understanding his leap and body strength give him time to hang and direct his headers. It’s an area i’m sure he’ll improve at.

This is my biggest gripe when people write him off so early. He has obvious weaknesses but the growth we saw since his debut is huge which means he’s clearly trying very hard to get better. Some kids get to a big club and plateau but it seems he works every day to become a better striker.

Dominic is still only twenty one, played out of position quite a lot, the more he plays as an out and out striker the better he will become, there is definitely a very good player there, have some patience with the young players, I'm not saying any of the young players coming through are going to be world class players but some of them will become very good
premier league players; give them time: please.

..as soon as I saw him for the U23s I thought he had something about him and predicted he would breakthrough before Christmas (largely because of the lack of quality ahead of him in the queue). Goalscorers work in pictures. They have a picture in their mind of where the goal is and where the keeper is. It’s why they usually finish cleanly inside the post. I don’t think DCL is ever going to be that type, but he’ll improve and get his quota. He’ll also benefit those playing around him.

I doubt many CBs will look forward to playing against him.

Yeh but at the same time, with the changing ways teams play and formations are set out, I think it’s a little archaic to view a striker as solely a goal scorer.

He’ll always get you some goals but he gets more assists than your average finisher and seems to give his teammates lots of space.

He’s more Kevin Davies in effect more than a Lukaku.

I pop into this thread every so often and it's like deja Vu, the same arguments for and against. Why not have a season long amnesty, give the lad time to develop, OK it's a novel idea to give a young player a chance to grow into the player that I'm sure everyone here wants him to become but you never know it just might work!!!!
