Are you really going to judge him on his first few seasons, when he was a teenager, playing on the wings or even at wing back? Very harsh IMO.

What kind of numbers did you expect him to be hitting in those seasons? Its very very rare for an u21 player to consistently perform in the prem.

Let's get it right, he's played wing back Abar 3 times in his career so let's put that myth straight to bed.

Am I going to judge him on his first few seasons? Yes of course I am do we give people 4/5 years before we can judge them?

Is Tom Davies getting judged now when he came into the team exactly the same time as dom did?

He's got 13 league goals this season

Just had a gander he started off with 3 goals in 15 = poor return

Then got 10 in 10 under Dunc and Carlo and went on a mad spell

And has now gone 9 games without even looking likely to score

So what youse are saying is a striker who turns up for 1/3 of the season is boss?

He shouldn't be sold and desveres to be in the squad but I would get a better striker in if we could myself, a sick spell in 10 games over his Everton career isn't enough to change my mind
tbf, since the restart he hasn't had too much service, Richo will score one out of nothing, but DCL needs to wear them down.
I feel it's no coincidence that yesterdays game we had lots of 2nd half pressure in their box and he had chances, decent chances.
He'll get there.

If we sort out the players behind the front two, we'll score more than enough to win those games we were losing

When they are youngsters we most definitely do, or at least we should. How many u21 players are consistently producing in the premier league week in week out?

Davies has regressed drastically since he broke through, with this year possibly being his worst so far.

Dom has undoubtedly progressed year on year since breaking through, with this season being his best.

Big difference.

Thats fair. I'dalso add though, we've had 1 striker in 25 years who's regularly scored 14+ league goals per season. We all want another one, but they don't grow on trees. He's just not our biggest priority currently, you want to improve every position but there's an acute sense of priority for me.

The defence (or 3/4 ofit) looks ok for me. Midfield needs an overhaul. If we can do that over the next 2 windows and Calvert Lewin is still at say 13 league goals a season. Our midfield doesn't make chances for poeple. It's why Tosun and Kean had 1 goal each. They are poor. Put Bardy, or Ings or whoever in front of that midfield and they don't get many. Most DCL chances he makes for himself.

exactly, if our right back could weigh in with some decent crosses the number of chances thestrikers get goes up, if our midfielders can increase their through ball the number goes up. At the moment we’re poor in both these areas. Then if some of the midfielders can start scoring goals of their own and your defence remains as solid as it is the overall improvement from just a few changes can be huge.

For me DCL does what I want strikers to do, he works hard, he holds the ball up, he runs in behind to stretch the defence and he scores goals. Sure I’d love it if he had an amazing deft touch and could create like Aguero or Messi does but the number of strikers of his stature in world football who can do that are limited to probably 1 (Lewandowski) every other target man type striker has an attribute missing somewhere (e.g Giroud has a great touch but no pace, Dzeko has pace and a good touch but isn’t going to be working the defence for 90 minutes defending from the front).

How many of those names you’ve mentioned have hit 15 goals in a season (in top tier English football).

We’ve worshipped strikers in the past who havent even made single figures season after season yet we’re knocking a lad who’s hit 15 in a team that doesn’t create chances.
The one against Notts County was a particular good strike.

That's interesting as for me DCL isn't a striker that makes his own chances. He isn't good at beating a man or running away from defenders with the ball. Like the other night, he didn't get away from his man and his resulting shot was half blocked.

He's crying out for better service, like you say, and a more fluid style of football from the team, which should lead to more chances being created for him. It's down to him then to take a reasonable percentage of those chances.

I've not been a fan of his, as my posts in this thread would no doubt show, but I agree the midfield needs to be drastically improved and then see how he does. Sort the midfield before a striker essentially - we may find that we don't need to sort the striker. Let's hope Brands and Ancelotti have the priorities in the right order too.

No mistake the lad is progressing , he isnt the Bambi kid anymore . ( he's surprised me tbh )
He really puts himself about now and centre halves wont like playing against him. Some games he looks a real handful yet doesnt look like scoring....last night was one of those games.
All strikers have dry spells and Dom is no different , it will come again.
Should have buried that header tho.
Carlo obviously likes him , but he is the type of manager that will want real competition in the striker department and I can see another forward coming in this window.

This is exactly why we can forget actually achieving anything of note and keeping our best players if players like Davies and DCL are playing regularly.

We need to be working to ensure that we're never in a position to see the likes of them play as many games as they have ever again. Or barring a class of 92-esque miracle, we will continue to slip down the league.

Can someone confirm how many times DCL was played at right wing back?

Given the fact it's mentioned every 3/4 pages I assume it must have been at least half a season.

It never happened.

People saw a team sheet once and assumed he was playing as a wing back, he wasn't.

He obviously played out wide an awful lot earlier in his career though.

It was more to avoid people coming back with Deeney’s exploits in the championship or Naismith in Scotland.
I was just being facetious, but it does make me laugh how these things get repeated until they're accepted as facts.

People will be pretending that he scored 15 league goals forevermore.

Interesting. So you're saying it's a complete myth that people have been happy to treat as fact.

Players "like Davies and DCL"?

These are not similar players, one has been performing for us more often than not, the other has not.
