2020/21 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

For me he typifies our until recently standard of signing. Capable of producing class moments, threatens to look a genuine like a top player but ultimately he is a mid table striker.

I'm using league goals because the standard of opposition is the same for everyone.

That aside, the argument is that there needs to be an alternative, not a replacement. Even if you believe that Calvert-Lewin is so good that despite all the resources at their disposal, Everton couldn't possibly hope to find a striker anywhere in the world capable of pushing him for his place, there's still the very real risk of him getting a serious injury at some point. Then what?

I understand that some fans get a lot of pleasure from seeing their favourite player add to his goal tally, but there are going to be games where a different approach is required.
The guy who has the most goals excluding penalties in the league in a below average creative side is not a mid-table player.

And with that in mind, yes I believe DCL is so good that we will not be finding someone better as the number of players who do that is pretty low and almost all won't be signing here.

For me DCL is versatile enough that there is not approach we could conceive of where he isn't the best option we will have.

I realy like DCL, he does soo much right, and is going to get better.

But...he lacks that clinical egde, and imo, that was a massive reason we lost us the game at weekend.

I hate dragging players out and having a pop, but he had 3/4 opertunities created, and didn't test the keeper once. Lukaku gets 4 goals in this game.

Really like the lad, and love how he has developed and hope he will get that last bit to his game VERY soon.

May as well wrap up the scouting network, then.

19 goals.

19.

The last player to get that for us was Lukaku.

But Evertonians don't actually like strikers who score goals. That's not enough. They've got to do everything else, and bang them in from 20 yards, and play incredible through balls.

The lad has 19 goals this season. That is a brilliant return.

He's become a poacher. Put him anywhere within 10 yards and he's more than likely hitting the target. Get him in 6 yards and he's gonna score.

You know what we should do then? Create more chances for him to put away.

But no, let's say he's crap and that we need better.
He's had plenty of service in the game. He's starting to look like a very limited forward. Poor first touch, poor composure in 1v1 situations. Only time he reliably produces is the box, when he doesn't have time to think and just reacts instead. Which is all fine and well, it's just that we need more than that. Hopefully Richy can provide.

But he missed 2 free headers. And missed controlled passes that wouid have put him free on goal, more than once. You can tell truth about a player’s performance you know, you don’t have to be blinkered
I am not. The fact that he missed an opportunity or two is not that important. He scored and ALL strikers miss chances. Our defeat was due to a totally inept midfield who were outfought, outthought and could not string two passes together.

Nah, but what we're doing here is like Villa saying let's improve on Grealish. It isn't realistic at all. DCL is one of our best players so we should build around him. Get proper creativity in place and he'd score more.

That's fine if he gets service - it has been slowly evaporating with injuries in our midfield says it all our only Jan signing was King & he plays him out on the wing as a substitute....

The King situation is bizarre.

Everton went into the January window sitting 4th, but needing an injection of fresh legs to keep the momentum going.

Not only has the chance of qualifying for the Champions League gone before he's started a game, he can't even play in the FA Cup.

Waste of time.

Why can't we just be OK with having a nice thing?

I mean if you can point me in the direction of the better goal scorers this season in the league I'm all ears.
Because no one can ever just be a good player.

They've always got to be on their way to either Real Madrid or Tranmere.

Agreed Plus look at some young fresh legs out on loan.......not costing us the earth either

Clearly just brought in to make up the numbers it seems. Needed a back up striker and option for the wing.

I don’t think we had the resources to do any better in January given all outgoings it took just to bring him in.

I didn't expect him to be a revelation or anything, but I thought he'd start ahead of Bernard and Iwobi.

Anyone else think that a couple of the "bad touches", were actual too good a touch ??!! The ball didn't get out of his feet enough for him to run onto, or take the shot.

Suppose either way, he needed to sort his feet out much better and faster.

The header from the right in the 2nd half was pretty shocking, I love the lad, but thats his food n drink. That goes in its 2-2 with good mins to win it.

Like I said, I hate dragging lads out who have been great for us, so lets hope he corrects it and is bang at it the next game.
