2020/21 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Never understand why people have to look for the negatives in our own players, those who have contributed to a lot of points for us this season and help us get to where we are.

Criticise those that are crap fair enough but without Doms goals this season we’d be around 15th in the table. We have a lot to be thankful for this season because of him.
Its dead weird.

Fella has been banging them in all season, hes been a monster, he has 1 poor game were his touch was a little off and suddenly hes garbo.

I was stunned with how bad his touch was, its not like him, normally hes a magnet, but now suddenly he cant finish and he has a rubbish touch.

None of which are remotely true.

Well yes

But there's nothing wrong with having high expectations with someone like Dom because he's much better than he showed the other night. Most forwards would be happy with getting the goal but he shouldn't be because he's a top player. He's a player who has improved year on year so no reason that doesn't continue because he still has flaws to work on.

Far better having players who we know can keep on raising the bar than players who have already hit their ceiling.

I just find it funny the number of pages he gets after a so-so performance with a goal compared to how quiet the Richy thread is when he has quite a common invisible match.

He hasn't been banging them in all season though that's the point, wasn't Saturday his 3rd goal in about 14 games ( or something close ) that's not banging them in all season.

I mean I like Dom and I think he has been very good these last 18 months but his touch can be pretty poor and it isn't just one match.

Fluffing two chances doesn't earn him some of the posts in this thread though. If he hadn't scored one yesterday I would understand the moaning but he got one and got us back in the game. The fact that we have to rely on either him or Richarlison taking every single chance they get is the problem.

Like the one at Chelsea he nearly hit the corner flag with that barely got a mention?
Both players have missed chances. But my opinion is Richarlison is a better player and plays in a number of different positions. So won’t have the chances DCL does.

I also think of the goals he scored v palace & Southampton last season, goals DCL isn’t capable of scoring

I don't really understand how that relates to my query.

Because Richy is a better player he gets more leeway or something?

But he hasn’t got leeway. I’ve just said he’s got loads this year.
And if it was him that missed 2 headers v Burnley and miss controlled 3/4
Passes that would have put him through on goal. Then he would have been getting stick off the fans the last few days

I'm using league goals because the standard of opposition is the same for everyone.

That aside, the argument is that there needs to be an alternative, not a replacement. Even if you believe that Calvert-Lewin is so good that despite all the resources at their disposal, Everton couldn't possibly hope to find a striker anywhere in the world capable of pushing him for his place, there's still the very real risk of him getting a serious injury at some point. Then what?

I understand that some fans get a lot of pleasure from seeing their favourite player add to his goal tally, but there are going to be games where a different approach is required.

Fair enough.

The problem is, we have alternatives and they only get games as they are wingers. It's the Harry Kane conundrum, a fella who is going to score 15+ league goals from open play is not going to come to Everton to sit in the bench.

If you wanted an alternative, it would look and feel a bit like either Moise Kean (young prospect) or versatile forward (Josh King).

Probably be even lower than that if we're playing with 10 men every week.

Nice to have those additional 18 points though. Don’t understand why people are on his back. He’s scoring goals and contributing towards the team. There are bigger fish to fry that aren’t doing their jobs at all in this squad. Targeting one of our better players this year is very strange if you ask me. Much bigger problems.
