Oooor get two competent forwards in and still have DCL as an extra option
This is what we have to do seriously. Reliance on DCL has seen us in 2 relegation scraps. When fit he does a job albeit not being a prolific goal scorer. He gives the team focus but paramount we get a couple of big strikers in and have Tom Cannon on a loan recall. Would be nice to be able to switch the forward line about when in trouble in a match.

Yeah, this. Who would you bring in?

I sort of think we need 3 x 'instant' fit (a LB who can bomb on, a CB and CF) and then 3x players who will hopefully grow like Iwobi and McNeil, in RB, no.10 and middle of the park.

If we had any money to invest mate, like the sum we spent on Onana last season- id spend the bulk of it on Brennen Johnson, hes the real deal, will only get better and appreciate, forgives our sins at wide forward and also a striking option.

If we dont, i think we are targeting function, within the limits of a small budget adding to the collective, but also trying to get creativity, assists and goals into the team - someone like Jack Harrison is a good functional signing especially at £16 mill and particularly if you are flipping for someone like Gray.

Up front realistically, we have to go for a forward, who isn't established or is looking for a move to PL - we cant afford anyone else. So candidates would be Weighorst, Iheanacho or the lad from Coventry.

Left full - i wondered would this be somewhere we could look at a loan maybe someone like Sergio Gomez at City - would a Digne loan be out of the question. Functionally i think Walker Peters makes sense and forgives some sins - while i wouldn't be closed minded on Charlie Taylor either at a pinch.

I like a lot of the Leeds wingers to be honest, Sinisterra and Summerville in particular. Gnotto looked alright in fits and starts. id be a big fan of Max Cornet but his injuries would be a big turn off and concern.

Id also like to see someone centrally someone able to break a line with a pass a bit more then The Duke - Ndiaye we've been linked with but unlikely, maybe someone like Smith Rowe (if Onana went to Arsenal) or Drewsby Hall could be options.

While i can list loads players id like more and beyond the above if money isnt an object - i think it clearly is, so they are the ones ive chosen in the limits of the budget we likely have. All would have there + and -, but its just a realistic appraisal of what could improve us, add to the collective and balance us given what i think is a limited context. Obviously we would only get about 2/3 of them realistically and perhaps a loan.

Well that's my argument in getting shut of him right away and paying up his contract.

But there'd be buyers for DCL. There'll always be some mug to take a forward with a decent goal scoring record despite the last 2 years worth of injuries.

If he's put up for sale we'll see some interest.
Everton would have to be willing to settle for a very low fee, especially if he expects to keep earning more or less what he's on here.

Even then, I'm not sure who would be looking to put a player of his level on £80k a week.

As I said above, he's played in a third of games in each of Everton's last two seasons. That's not enough for us, and neither is his GS rate in those seasons.

However, his movement is undoubtedly of a high class and he leads the line well, opening up space and linking the attack. There'd be clubs at the top end of this league outside of City who'd pay a decent enough fee just to be able to call on that talent for 15 games or so to make the difference for them...and he'd probably have a better training regime at those clubs, and he'd have better players to work with saving him from over extending himself as he has to with us.

Calvert-Lewin has talent, there's no question of that. But his lack of game time for a club reliant on him makes it no sense for him to be with us. It'd be best for him and us and any team that secured his services if a deal could be done.

He's a good target man and a handful when motivated, but that's about it. He can't beat a defender or shoot from outside the box, and he scores at a lower rate than the likes of Ings, Bamford and Mitrovic.

I doubt the club has any intention of moving him on regardless. This is the sort of outfit that, if put in United's shoes, would have passed on signing Cantona because Dion Dublin's broken leg was healing nicely.

If United can go for someone like Weghorst on a loan deal they'd at least be willing to do so for DCL with an agreement to purchase if it worked out.

I think you overestimate the level of attackers at the likes of Arsenal and United and defo Spurs soon if Son and Kane move on.

I mean, I'm not talking about a £50M fee for DCL. But he'd defo raise £20M to £25M.

Good post mate.

Not sure the squad is thin number wise - but in terms of options it is - the likes of Gomes, Dele and Gbamin are dead spots in the squad really (dont get me started on the cost).

In other areas we are too heavy, centre back in particular - other areas we are to light wide forward, full back and upfront.

Their are areas i look at i think we can improve, wide positions, ive been pleasantly surprised by McNeill - but he has to maintain the form.

Gray i think if we were player trading is a position we could improve on.

Iwobi also for me is player we could improve on, he is capable of great moments, but also really poor ones - but ultimately i feel he has no control to his game or performances and never will - hes useful on about 50k a week - but hes never a 100k a week player so i would move on because for that wage we can improve him.

Ultimately though i agree with you, bottom line we need a centre forward, a left full and a wide forward at minimum.

Im expecting nothing specutacular, strong steady signings. Ultmately it wont be about individual players, i think like you - that it will be about the collective - we will be more then invidivdual names, or stars but collectively stronger.

That's how it will be and probably how it needs to be, given our finances and also the overhang in the squad still.
Iwobi is excellent. Even my Dad, 88 and seen them all points out that all he needs is to be surrounded with players as good as himself.

He is a good player but those injuries make him 15mill tops I reckon. Would get another No9 and try to get half a season out of Dom.

Pretty fair assessment that.

Simms wasn’t fancied but I do wonder what a preseason might do for him.

15 games per season is no good to us. We need two new forwards in. Sell him and it funds one of them.
