Lukaku consistently scored for us. His numbers are fantastic.
Lukaku's league goal distribution during that period has lots of four, five and six game dry spells, and he didn't net in the last ten games in his third season. Got benched for it during the middle of that dry spell. I stand by the claim that he was streaky.

DCL's last three seasons in the league: 13, 16, 5 (playing 50% of the games)
Lukaku's four seasons here in the league: 15, 10, 18, 25

The criticism of Lukaku's 25 goal season was that he feasted on bums. One goal against the top six (City). The next closest club behind us in eighth finished 15 points back of us on 46 points. He did work in World Cup qualifying that year...but same thing. Belgium's group was full of bums. Greece, Bosnia, Estonia, Cyprus, Gibraltar? I hope you're shelling those.

That breakout season got him the reputation and the big contract. It doesn't follow that he was that much more than a healthy DCL, after his breakout, as a player. The big thing about Lukaku was that he missed one more game total for us in four years due to injury than DCL missed this season. He was as durable as Keane, so there was never really a question over whether or not he would kick in double-digit goals over the course of a season.

So when he doesn’t turn up we don’t score - which implies we need goals from elsewhere in the team, namely, our wingers?

I would rather have 3 front men who can all score 10 goals than one striker that might get 30
We need a new strike force is what we need.

January has to bring it. As good as today was we wont get many more games like it.

Times there when we needed a Delofeu type to get it into the box from wide deep as he was one on one sitting just behind the last man. Wingers always want to cut inside rather than putting a cross in and when they do they couldn’t pick him out. Gotta work on that because you give him that opportunity he’s got to the stage where he’s going to make something happen.

Great to see him winning the ball and making space and finishing it off at exactly the right time.

Dave IS right in that he needs to now keep up his fitness and get some numbers on the board, consitently, but thats just common sense. I think were only a creative player upgrade away from a team we can finally recognize. A real clever number 10, a fit DCL and a good crosser of the ball and thats a side with a deep bench that can play several different ways.

lol

Please dont put him in that company.
He's obviously not in the league of the latter two, and never will be. Which is more or less my point: even Messi had runs of three or four games here and there when he was shut out in a league not known for its defensive nous, or rules favoring defenders. Strikers are streaky, in general. Some are worse about it than others. The worse about it they are, the more a side needs the set piece contributions and the worldies from the wing and midfield.

Right now City is starting with 1.5 on the board with Haaland in the lineup, which is nuts. The only thing about it is that it hasn't happened yet.

He's never in Lukaku's league either.

He had a run of good form a couple of seasons back. That's it.

I remain steadfast: we cant rely on Calvert-Lewin and we need a goalscorer in January to avoid getting drawn into the relegation scrap.

We don't.

We need players who can create chances. No point having a goalscorer if there are no chances to convert is there? Would be nice to get a player who can do both though.

Anyway we have a few weeks with what we have got, maybe today continues. Probably not but let's see.

We could deffo do with another option or two in the attacking half.

I don't think he's that inferior to Lukaku, when healthy. That bit of emphasis matters.

I still think we're fine so long as we find some way to sort the set piece problem. We don't have to bang in fifty playing rock-solid defense. Forty will do just fine.

If I had to guess, Thelwell spends what we freed up at the end of the window on salary bumps for the players whose contracts we need to renew.
