2024/25 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

He's what we can afford. A (very) poor finisher and adequare in the air/at holding the ball up, but no more than that - i don't buy the myth that he's g'reat at holding the ball up' and that 'it sticks with him.' More often than not, it doesn't. Plus, someone needs to teach him how to hit a ball hard. Even if he didn't hit it straight at the keeper, the keeper could stroll over to it and throw his cap on it

It’s not a confidence thing

The whole confidence thing is a myth

The sooner people just accept the fact he’s a bad finisher and can easily be replaced this summer the better
Two things can be true. Yes he’s not a natural finisher with his feet, he doesn’t particularly strike a ball cleanly either, but whatever his natural level of performance, it is worsened due to confidence levels. Give me a natural finisher any day as movement to a degree can be honed, not sure finishing can.

All strikers rely on confidence in front of goal and bar that season under Carlo, I don’t think DCL has ever had any confidence in front of goal. He’s certainly not a natural finisher.

There isn’t even any thought in his finishes though … that’s what gets me … he literally scuffs or side foots the ball straight an the keepers legs.

He should try something else , take it round them, hit it hard and early , dink it etc

His main mistake is he runs directly at the keeper … he needs to shift the ball left or right and then shoot quickly as the gk is moving his feet … when the gk is planted and facing straight at you it’s hard to get it past them.

Lukaku and Henry have both said how they move the ball and then wait until the keeper shifts and as soon as one of his feet touches the ground they take the shot as the keeper can’t react in time as his weight is already shifting .

DCL has no idea what to do… was it villa when he was one on one and didn’t even get a shot off?

I just don't think he is a natural finisher at all. He's one of those footabllers that has gotten to this level through hard graft and exceptional physical qualities while being average at other aspects of football such as technical play. He's a forward by design in a way. If he was a natural finisher he'd easily be one of the top strikers in the league due to what he does in terms of his hold up play and he would be on 6 or so goals already. Problem is that he isn't and at 27 he's not going to improve on that aspect. He will probably struggle on and get 10 goals if he stays fit but the chances given he should really be hitting around 15 a season.

I don't think he always was bad at one v ones. Under ancelotti he was scoring regularly. I think that he's going through a phase where he is just thinking to hit the target.

Whereas under ancelotti he was more confident and trying intricate chips or something a bit different. That being said he did try to go round the keeper against Villa and even that didn't work. I think it will come and when he scores a one v one he will bag a fair few.

People still gonna come on here and tell me he doesn’t get chances created for him

It's a bit forgiveable when a striker scores 15 goals like he did under Carlo, but he's been in the top 10 of missed chances every year since Carlo was appointed, leaving out the 21-22 and 22-23 where he was more injured than fit.

In the end, a striker is measured at scoring.

Good that we have players to compensate this year with McNeil and Ndiaye.
