2024/25 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

He obviously believes he is a far better player than he is and that isn't helped by the manager telling us that his numbers are good what ever that means.
I really hope they have binned the contract offer that was on the table as it would be ridiculous to offer him more than the 100 grand a week he currently earns ,I would offer him half of that take it or leave it.
When he finally does move he will realise that every other club in Europe expects their centre forward to score the occasional goal.

The alternative may be to pay a transfer fee AND those wages to somebody else - so I don't think it is quite as insane as it sounds.

That said - does it break our wage structure ? How does it affect PSR etc. ?

And fundamentally - is he actually a striker worth keeping ?

That's why Beto has essentially been on his way out from the moment he got here, as opposed to the club falling over itself to put him on Champions League wages that he patently isn't worth.

I don't think DCL is on CL mate. Not even close. They tend to pay strikers 200k p/w plus.

But yes, DCL is clearly not Teddy Sheringham, but his hold up play compared to our alternatives, Maupay, Beto, Gray (when he played there) are much superior. I don't think what wages Beto is or isn't paid have any relevance to that.

Yes, he's been a regular in a team that has dropped from European contenders to perennial relegation candidates.

I'll certainly give him that much.

I'm not sure what your point is here really? Do you think you think that may be to do with selling all our best players to comply with PSR?

Is Pickford rubbish as well by this litmus test?

I can understand people don't rate DCL, but this doesn't feel a very convincing argument to me.

By the end of this season, Beto will have cost us over £30m.

DCL will have cost us about £31m over 8 years. Sticking him on £130k (according to rumours about what he wants) a week would be ludicrous which is why the club said no and didn’t fall over itself to put him on those wages.

Yep, it is deffo his fault ;)
Of course not. Nothing is ever his fault.

If he's on £100k a week here, that's more than the vast majority of players in the Champions League. The numbers you're talking are reserved for the biggest names at the top-spending clubs.

Broja appears to be capable of offering the same level of hold-up play for less than half the price, and he's basically a journeyman-in-waiting.

I think it was a perfectly suitable response to the claim that he must be a good player if he's been getting picked by a succession of Everton managers.

Pickford's quality speaks for itself. I don't really know why he's still here, but I'm glad of it.

No way can we pay him those wages ....

The point is that Beto will be in and out before he's played 50 games because the club has acknowledged he isn't good enough.

Calvert-Lewin, on the other hand, has been rejecting offers to improve a salary that is well beyond his level of ability.

He needs to go because the relationship has very very much run its course. The money side almost needs ignoring. Whatever we “could” consider overpaying on his salary for him to stay is buttons compared to what we would spend on an identical player from another club that isn’t on a free transfer. Could very easily spend £25m on an £80k a week donkey that contributes even less. They are out there and we usually find them.

I like Dom, and would consider keeping him with the “free transfer premium” on his salary rather than blowing transfer fee on a gamble ONLY if a new manager came in tomorrow. But it would still be wrong. Him leaving this week would best for all parties. Takes up too much of the conversation given how little impact he has.
