Those are pretty big things to be missing when you're a striker though, no? And if they're 'natural' it doesn't really matter how old he is does it, because you've either got natural talent or you haven't.

For me personally, he looks like he's short of a few of the skills needed to be top drawer. I agree that he doesn't appear to have that natural goalscoring instinct in terms of either movement or finishing, but if you look at the goals he's scored, too many of them are just bog standard finishes for my liking. I'm yet to see him score that goal that makes you think he's really got something - cutting inside and curling one in the top corner or taking it down on his chest and hitting a half volley from 20 yards. If you only score goals from inside the box, you need to be able to score a lot of them, and I'm yet to be convinced that he can.
This was what I was trying to say, last night. I had had six pints at that stage though.

Definitely needs a loan in the Championship for a season to beef up a bit and learn a few nuances but still have hopes he'll develop into a really good player. He's got a great workrate and is handy in the Target Man role but doesn't read the play well enough a lot of the time and often struggles against athletic centre-halves.

40 games or so at a slightly lower level to develop could be the making of him. Not his fault the club so badly ballsed up replacing Lukaku and he got slung in alongside Niasse to provide the goals.

I'm not saying he's 'special'. But equally so every squad needs a player in that type of position who can do a bit of everything.

The lad is quick and strong and has a good first touch. He hassles defences and works hard. He can and has played all along the front line.

Now I agree entirely that he is missing an important part of his game in that regard, and needs to improve it. I'd love to see him in a two or as part of a proper front three with support, because his pace and height create issues for defences.

behave mate, he/she's got blue in his username!

they also said "who cares, stuff is said" about the holgate race scandal.
It’s a he.
That’s more my mentality with how everyone is offended about everything nowadays (plus had a few beers generally keep my gob shut about such things), which is on a different thread. This is about DCL.

Disagree on these.

I thought he was appalling at times last year and now I think he's fairly handy and he has improved enormously.

If he continues to improve at this rate, and most importantly ups his goal return, then he will be very good. He's got that top end pace that hurts teams if it's complemented by a striker's instinct and good link up play. I think he will be very useful by the time he's 23.

He’s improved a lot & been isolated up top for long periods. He works hard and covers a lot of ground and to be fair he’s been played wide on a few occasions and puts a fair shift in. If I have one criticism he doesn’t appear a natural finisher and for a centre forward that’d probably help!

But, he’s scored in a World Cup final, got a fit bird & puts a more illustrious names to shame with his work rate, so he’s got a lot more going for him than most of our current first team. Pleased for him, his quips to young fans after the game about our neighbours also show a wise head on young shoulders! Done better than most this year and with his new contract he’s clearly highly rated at the club.
