DCL was not brought up in the academy of a premiership club. After coming to Everton he very quickly graduated to the first team so he is effectively learning on the job.
Ultimately I think he will play as a centreforward but has played very few game there so far and probably has not been ready to play there either.

In time I think he will be a target man, a leader ,a goal scorer but probably never prolific. A Graeme Sharp type centre forward perhaps.

I get why people say certain players are still young and will improve etc. But I have seen enough of DCL to know that he is not good enough for a team who talks about being in the top six of the Prem.

The lad is not a finisher, his first touch is poor, and his passing is not good enough. He isn’t good enough. That’s not the end of the world, he can go on to have a good career somewhere else, but being a great athlete does not equal being a great footballer.
I hope he prove you wrong mate, and hopefully here at Everton.

But if he does move on and become a top striker elsewhere, I'll be wishing him all the best.

At the moment, in his age group and position, there's probably only Rashford ahead of him in the British game and he's probably in the top 15 worldwide. The next couple of years are key in his development, and he has as good a chance as anyone of making a top striker. I don't know how you can so categorically write him off at 21. It's beyond me.

Sharp? Our highest post war goal scorer? He could score a goal from nothing DCL hasn't got that ability and never will.

Sharp had only about 6 appearances for us in his first year, prior to finding a partner was getting talked about as to lightweight, lacked aggression ect, wasn't helped by the rumors that we had looked at him and Rush at the time and chosen him instead. he wasn't playing anything like the player he turned into
At the same age and stage of there career you could say DLC has been more impressive, time will tell if that carries on but its miles to early to right him off.

Sharpe couldn't score from anywhere when he was 20/21 and didn't look like he ever would either. In fact, at the same age, DCL is for me the better player.

The point the poster was making is that you dont have to be a prolific scorer to be a good striker. Sharpe was never prolific but has probably been my favourite striker in the 40 years I've been watching us. DCL has similar attributes and I hope he turns out as good.

He doesn’t have the ability to be a top striker. He is an abysmal finisher, and his first touch is dreadful.

Do you think I want DCL to fail? Of course I don’t, I want him to get 20 goals a season. I hope I am wrong, but I don’t see it.

I mean, Gabriel Jesus is considered one of the best young strikers in the world, and he didn’t score 20 this season, and he was playing in the centre forward role.

Jesus is at the best club in the country by far, the best attack, possibly in the world supporting him, and he got 17 this season.

DCL is at the team which had like the least amount of shots in the premier league, that finished 8th, being put on the wing a lot, and scored 8 goals this season.

Just let him develop and play his game. He has some quality attributes but as a club, we haven’t exactly helped him to do well this season.

I dont think he'll be a regular 20 a season player either. He still has a lot of improvement to do to prove he has a long term future at Everton. But at 21 I'm not giving up on him.

Jesus has a 1 in 2 goal ratio at city.
DCL has 1 in 10

A top centre forward will make chances for the team as well as taking his chances

Dom doesn't play that regularly for us but still scored 8 in a team that creates 1 chance per game. He quite often comes on and gives us a different option. He's strong, good in the air, works hard for the team, has good technique in the ball but lacks the natural composure and instinct of a goal scorer.

He is certainly deserving of a first team squad place but will his development be affected by a lack of game time? We're also in the position of wanting to progress the club whilst having a number of youngsters with great potential that are not the finished article.

Hard to make chances when we don’t venture into the opposition half. And DCL hasn’t really been playing as a centre forward.

The point being, we shouldn’t really be ratings one of our youth that clearly has bags of potential, on this season.

There is always the chance a player can do what Harry Kane did and develop from nowhere but those are freak instances. As you say, it's hardly likely his finishing or technique are going to improve much from now.

His best attributes are chasing lost causes and putting himself about so I'd actually argue our style of football last season suited him.
