At the moment, he's the only target man we have who can play the central role, the others are all support strikers to me. We obviously need a more experienced striker but this lad did more to stretch the defence than Rooney and Sandro had done in the whole tie (in the central position). Any game time he gets should be in this position, I'm looking forward to when he notches his 100th club goal in a few years.
My thoughts exactly. He's not a winger and is completely wasted in that position, but as a centre forward he looks very useful indeed - much more effective than Rooney and Sandro put together. It will be fascinating to see how he performs in the Premier League.

"When the ball goes dead, good players come alive."
DCL is rightly getting credit for taking his goal well, but I haven't seen anyone point out how he made it too.
At the throw in a few seconds before we recovered the ball, he was on the same side of the field as everyone else, but the big defender (him that failed inthe chase) turned his back on him for a second. DCL wandered off into that space and made sure to stay onside and in the defender's blind spot. There was nothing on when he did it, but seconds later he's free in an acre if space and finished well to get the goal he deserved.
It was really simple, and yes, it was against tired, lower quality opposition. It was so basic that you'd almost be disappointed if he didn't do it, but we could all name strikers that would not have had the focus and will to take up the position and the brains to stay onside.

Thought he's looked a lot more like a player in the last 2 games. Technically better, stronger and more aware.

Opponents were an ale house team though.

I have nothing against him he moves well enough, but when he has the ball he's clueless most of the time.

Koeman is using him because he spent out for him. If he'd inherited him or he came up through the ranks he'd be out on loan at Reading or somewhere else by now.

He was bought by Steve Walsh, David, just like all our players are.

As if Koeman would risk getting knocked out of a Europa qualifier just to save face by bringing on a signing he thought was a dud.

He brought him on because he believed he could influence the game, and he was right to think that.

I wasn't impressed last season but he's 20 and he's highly tipped, give him a chance.

I will. I'm just saying that having seen him he is very poor technically speaking.

True, but I still seen an improvement in his game. See how he develops over the year

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin admits he must work extra hard to convince Koeman

Dominic Calvert-Lewin insists he is fighting to prove he has an Everton future every time he steps on the pitch.

The 20-year-old striker knows how difficult it is for young players to make the first team grade in a Premier League awash with big money signings.

By comparison the forward joined the Blues for £1.5m from Sheffield United last summer as a relative unknown, but has seen his stock rise steadily since.

He made 11 senior appearances and scored once for Ronald Koeman's side last term, and capped that by playing a pivotal role in England's historic win in the u-20 World Cup this summer.

Calvert-Lewin scored the winner in the final against Venezuela and showed the confidence-boosting effects of that strike on Thursday night, dispatching the solitary goal which put Everton into the play off round of the Europa League.

Speaking after his second half strike in Slovakia sealed a 2-0 aggregate win over Ruzomberok, he said he knows he is still proving himself.

"Every player always has something to prove, that should be the way it is every year," he said. "I know what the challenge is: I have got to prove that I am good enough to play for Everton.

"I have got to do things like I did against Ruzomberok, coming on and affecting games when I get a chance. If I continue to do that, hopefully my future will be with Everton."

Koeman has signed forwards Sandro Ramirez and Wayne Rooney so far this summer, and has been linked with another centre forward in either Olivier Giroud or Christian Benteke,

It leaves Calvert-Lewin under no illusions about the size of the task he faces.

"Every season gets bigger and I know that there is going to be competition for places," he said. "I just have to keep doing what I am doing, scoring goals and working on my development so I am there fighting for a spot. I just have to keep scoring goals.

"The main objective for me (against Ruzomberok) was to come on and affect the game and thankfully I have done that.

"We have got the result but this is great for me and I am looking to kick on in my Everton career. It just mean working hard and thankfully I have got my goal."

The youngster says he will not lose perspective on his burgeoning career, despite his remarkable achievement on international duty in South Korea.

He added: "I don't really think it sinks in, to be honest. It's still one of those strange feelings to think that I have scored in a World Cup final.

"It's a moment that will live with me forever. I know I am in very select company. But it is down to me to kick on with that.

"With scoring a goal of that importance, there comes a lot of... I won't say there is expectation but people are more aware of who I am.

"Ronald Koeman does not let anyone get carried away with themselves and you have to work hard for your opportunities with him.

"I have also got people around me who will help me keep my feet on the ground. That is the way it has always been."

That doesn't mean he isn't enjoying the fame his World Cup strike has brought.

He said: "Things have changed a little bit, for sure. It's only positive things.

"I've been stopped a couple of times in the shops and it's all just a bit weird for a young lad who has come from where I've come from.

"I'm just trying to take it all in my stride. Whether being recognised will continue, I'm not sure but it is all positive.

"We'll see how it goes."

Sounds like a good lad.
