anytime this argument comes up i always refer to the anotonio gates story. anotnio gates was an excellent collegiate basketball plaer. all american good team etc etc. however his physical characteristics did not translate well to playing professional basketball. on a whim someone who had seen him play decided that he was an american football player. a team gave him a tryout based simply on the physical characteristics that he possesed. he had not touched a "football" for seven years. had not played a competitive game. there was no film or anything. he is now one of the best players in the league. why? becuase his physical charateristics he possesses translate perfectly to american football. although he never played the game, he still became one of the best players in the most athletic sporting pursuit on the planet.some people just fit certain endeavors perfectly. for example i believe trindon holliday is a striker. he may currently play american football and run track but i believe his physical characteristics are best suited to be a striker, not an american football player or track star. there are athletes out there who are so physically dominant and have physical traits that translate perfectly to the game of football that do not play football. i think it would be remiss to not examine the possibilty. there are poeple out there who god touched and said you are going to be a great athlete. their learning curves are short. their athletcism can hold them over until they learn how to best maximize their perfectly suited skills for football. its up to mannagers to bring out those skills.

i believe ive said previously its not a question of if its a question of when these american owners start to exploit the talent pool over there. in every sport everyone is looking for thatnext untapped talent pool. tom hicks and malcolm glazer are bad owners. their teams dont win over here where the balance is more competitive because of salary caps etc. they are bad owners. i wouldnt fear malcolm glazer or tom hicks. on the wrung of sports owners in america they are near the bottom. their teams are perrenial losers. they just have lots of money to buy players in football

No idea what has gone on with most of these posts but on the issue of Downing, he does seem to be the kind of player Moyes likes, in that he's in and around the England team but not on the radar of the top 4.
