I think he's nailed on to play fullback in the future
I didn't expect it to be an original idea but there you go from someone who probably looked into it and knows more than me.Scouting Report: Dwight McNeil
Dwight McNeil has been starring at the role of left midfielder for Burnley this season, conveying competence in both the attacking and defensive aspects of the game. This has caught the eyes of many who believe he could thrive in an attacking system at the fullback role. Today we are going to...breakingthelines.com
We've got Digne and my thing with McNeil is we've got Townsend who could do that job of just being there as an extra crosser of the ball.I think we'd only go as far as £20m, perhaps a bit more with add-ons on performance.
Can't see us going £30m for him.
Having someone on that left flank who can cross a ball would be great. Not seen enough of McNeil to have an opinion on him. I do know we need a whole right flank first though.

That doesn't mean he has the skills to play a more attacking role. It largely remains to be seen on that front but for example in the u21 Euros he didn't look dangerous in attack and that's clearly a lower level of competition.Really can't see it, and I've watched a fair bit of him.
The Dyche defence-first approach will have rounded his game and as a wing-back in a system like Chelsea's then yes, I definitely think he could work.
But Burnley fans have been frustrated because Dyche hasn't let him off the leash more in an attacking role.

For me that second paragraph is the description of a modern fullback in an attacking teamHard to judge in U21 footy though, especially under Boothroyd.
His skillset, from when I've seen him, bar that time he cut in against our s*** and scored a worldie, is staying wide, keeping the width. He's got a nice turn of pace but isn't a sprinter, got a bit of a trick in him too and a is a good crosser of the ball.
Just on whether we should be hunting him, unless we really think he can suddenly become a right winger who cuts inside, then it seems to totally go against what we need to be spending as much money as Burnley would want for him on.

I think McNeil is very comparable to LucasIMO that's actually more a wing-back description but it's semantics.
He's a winger right now, and we aren't an 'attacking' (whatever that means - more shots, possession?) team - and we aren't going to suddenly become one under Benitez.
We've got Digne to do that role if we could actually play the ball up the pitch in stages rather than just hitting it aimlessly long after going round in slow circles at the back for a minute each time.
Midfielder and right-back are of a much more pressing need (for the money McNeil would cost).
