Transfer Rumour Dwight McNeil

It was off topic, but was talking about the right back situation. Which has been an issue for years.
Sorry, I missed that.

I do think we will get a right back before the close of the window but it isn't vital to have one in immediately as we have probably three players who can fill that spot.

I think we may bring in a younger player with high potential who will not be rushed into team immediately but allowed to settle for a few months.... a bit like Godffrey.

If you're spending £30m on a player, it should be one who can meet your aspirations.

If McNeil can't get in a top six side, he shouldn't be bought for a side who wants to get into that top six.

But that said, you are right in that we're bringing in Andros Townsend, so "aspiration" isn't a term you can attach to Everton currently. "Incompetent" certain is however.
Who said he wouldn't get in a top six side.... I know I keep repeating the Richarlison comparison but I would guess people would have said the same.

The question is not how good he is today but how good he could become.

That is a good question and I really don't know is the answer.
He looked good against us at Goodison last season, but who didn't ?
He has been highly rated and spoken about for a couple of seasons already and that is a good sign.

I suppose the questions are if he is a good player in a limited Burnley team or a potentially very good player not fully able to prosper because he was in a limited Burnley team...... shades of Richarlison again.
And good answer .

If we got a richarlison I’d be happy I think he’s given us a fair bit and will probably move to bigger than us when he leaves . I do think the limited Burnley team is the worry. Also exactly as you say and i recall he shone at goodison but many did and it’s other than that or rather that I don’t really remember him but I’m obviously not a scout so let’s hope if he is signed ours have done their job .

He is a good football player with good all-round skills, and who has many years left before he peaks.

You do not have to be afraid of this. He is a very good football player.

He's ok, but I still don't understand for what are Brands and our scouting department being paid for. For unearthing players from the prem and inevitably overpaying?

If McNeil was a Richarlison type and the potential was there for all to see, it'd be a different story. It was a gamble but an educated one.

I just don't think McNeil is in the same ballpark. I think he's a 'decent' player, nothing more, with potential to just about be a top six standard player. He doesn't have the pace IMO to go next level.

All these arguments are all perfectly valid and all that

But why in the name of the Jolly Green Giant would ANYBODY pay £35M for DWIGHT sodding MCNEIL???

That's the sort of lunacy that left us with Iwobi on the books. Have we learned nothing?

You pay £5 million for someone like McNeil when he's playing for someone like Preston, Blackpool or Accrington at the age of 18.
