2022/23 Dwight McNeil

He's not very good, but, what concerns me the most, is the fact that he is absolutely no improvement on what we already had and plays in a position that we already had players for. Yes I know that Burnley let us buy him on the drip, but, whatever down payment we made could have been put to better use in the striker. Kitty. Perhaps, had we added that money to what we gave Brighton for Maupay, we may have been able to sign a more suitable centre forward.

I don't know if the decisions to sign McNeil and Maupay were made by Lampard, but, either way, they will probably cost him his job.
And they’ll still be here when he’s gone, doing the exact same thing for whoever the next poor sucker that takes the job.

I agree. And so it should. He keeps persevering with the pair of them as if to prove a point. Neither of them are good enough and he bought them. Richy replacement ? ? ? Sack

It’s pretty clear he doesn’t have a right foot, quite why Frank played him on the left with what appears to have been instructions to come inside is a bit baffling. If thats what he wants surely he got to start on the right so he can do something with him only working appendage.

Being hung out to dry by playing him wide when he has only got one foot (not literally) with nobody making any runs ahead of him. Has to turn back every single time.

Play him central or don't play him at all.

Did get the assist I suppose if you like that kind of thing.

Did Gray really deserve to miss out anyway? He has been one of our better, well, less worse, players this season.

Has to, why is that?

Sounds like a poor excuse for him that - he doesn't have to be cowardly every time he receives the ball out on the wing. He doesn't even try to go forward, his instinct is to hurriedly turn his body back towards our left back or centre halves to retain possession by passing off any responsibility.

He was absolutely pointless today and it was a disgraceful and pathetic performance from him. Gordon had a bad game and he did more in the sole minute or two that he switched wings on to McNeil's side than McNeil did all half.

He’s used to getting the ball and crossing it early without beating his man. That’s the only reason he was ever effective at Burnley, they had forwards who thrived off that service.

Can only assume the idea was he’d do the same here for DCL. Without a big target man in the box to aim for, there’s nobody to cross to and no reason for him to be in the team.

I don't really expect that it'll work out for him at the PL level because he's just not all that good. But if it is going to happen it will not be playing on the left, supported by a destroyer type midfielder and a LB who wants to overlap into the areas that his one footedness requires him to play into. It can't work.

He's being used as poorly as Iwobi was early in his time. I don't see as much from McNeil to suggest it'll come good that same way, but we've got to get him on the other side and try to have him play in that space inside the fullback. The current set up is nonsense.

If you want to have any faith in the club going forward you just have to choose to believe they didn't buy a player specifically for his ability to pump balls into the box for actual money. You could've spent like 5m on Solly March or Mohamed Elyounoussi or probably about 70 championship players for the works hard and launches crossers skillset. Hell we got Townsend for free.

Just out of curiosity did Iceland ever get charged with anything, let alone convicted, after his career was ended prematurely and we were deprived of a player?
As far as anybody knows he hasn't been charged, which makes it incredibly hard to believe he'd be charged at this stage, so long after the alleged incident. Nothing has come out either way, although you wouldn't really expect any news story to emerge if he wasn't charged.

That’s the reason the signed him alright - there was absolutely no other reason to do so. It’s what his entire career is based on, ability to whip a cross into the box. Didn’t do too badly for David Beckham to be fair. As far as faith in the club goes, that’s long gone, I’m afraid.

It’s worth a try, Paterson gets forward a lot, makes some good runs off the ball and Gordon misses most of it with his head down. He might link better with Paterson so worth a try I guess but it clutching at straws.
