ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

You oversaw the worst performances at a World Cup many will ever remember.

Ta ra you divvy.

Not entirely fair

He's had some good games as an England player

The 5-1 against Germany in particular
He did say ' barely '. It's virtually impossible to have a bad game if your team is handing out a 5-1 hiding.

Internationally, Gerrard has been awful. He has been in the England mix for over 10 years, has been to numerous tournaments and has played in all of Englands biggest games in this time frame, yet i can't remember a single time where he was the difference or did anything of note.

Well over 100 appearances for his country and the one game that you mention happened 13 years ago. That just about sums his international career up.

Caught Gerrard's interview on his retirement. Speaks very well.

He had a very poor international career though, given his ability and the form he was in from 2004-09. He was bossing games left right and centre for Liverpool around that time and he never got it to translate to the international stage.

In the interview he was asked to pick out great memories and moments he's proud of as an England player and he could only really pick out the goal against Germany and the important goal he scored in qualifying in the run-up to Brazil. I've thought about it and can't think of a whole lot else that he did of any real significance (unless I'm forgetting something). I can, however, immediately pick out a hat-full of exceptional achievements he accomplished at Liverpool, such as dragging them kicking and screaming to major trophies in consecutive seasons from 05 to 06 and playing a big part in their 2nd place finish in 2009.

His domestic and international performances have been polar opposites really. He's looked a different player in the England shirt. He typifies the problem behind England's failure at major tournaments. We have had great players, but there's been something missing, whether it's a mental thing for the players, or just a succession of inept management teams.

More likely inept management bowing to player/media pressure combined with Gerrard's own failings.

His best form (especially 2009) was under Benitez when he had no tactical responsibility at all other than to support the forward - which worked more often than not in English conditions, but saw him found out a bit at higher levels of the game (especially for England where the centre forward was invariably less good than Torres was at that time) where opponents didnt resort to a "passionate", fast and attacking style of game that left him loads of space.

However his status at the RS meant that under weak managers for both club and country he was (and continued to be) deployed in his "favourite" role, ie central midfield, pinging 70-yard Hollywood passes about the place, scoring the odd free kick, getting bypassed by more gifted and patient midfielders, and falling over at key moments.

Rodgers is not a weak manager...

Of course he is; he isnt one of them and hasnt won anything yet that would allow him to actually impose his way of playing on the side. Why else do you think he comes out with so many of their sex words in any given interview?

Has to be said though, a weak manager cannot get a team to 2nd, a perfect example of a weak manager would be Moyes and Rodgers is very different

You dont find out how "weak" someone else when things are going well, you find that out when things are going badly (as Moyes did).

Me in work after hearing that Slippy has retired from international football

Why is Coleman celebrating Lukaku's goal??
