ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

The way they can pull wins seemingly out of nowhere is something that both impresses me and makes me fume in equal measure

.....it is weird how many key decisions go their way, especially at home. I remember the Arsenal 4-4 game a few years ago where Gerrard was injured and part of the TV analysis. Arshavin scored a goal at the kop that was on the margins of off-side, but the 'line on TV' was proof that the linesman got the decision right. Gerrard with a straight face said he was amazed the linesman didn't put his flag up 'because that is offside here'. He genuinely believed there is a different set of rules for them.

It has always been part of their approach to get the ref on their side. I know this, but they do it with real subtlety. The superstar players get down the refs ear from the start, not aggressively but with a friendly tone. All very clever, all very strategic and all very planned.

I did see the bit at the end where they had Chiles and co. For me they were lucky to get away in the first half with no pen. And really only got the win because the goalie had a dose of dementia.

You really would think the refs would be well up to them by now...but theyre not. These players aren't exactly the Brains Trust yet they can still con and cheat officials to gain every advantage. Some people would say that's fair enough in the modern dog-eat-dog game, but its stomach churning rich when Rodgers himself is coming out with sanctimonious garbage in the press like:

“Yes, Jordan is our new vice-captain. I have been here a couple of years now and been able to give the decision real thought,”
the manager explained. He’s someone who represents a lot of what we are about - him and Stevie (Gerrard) are the moral compass of our group, how they conduct themselves on and off the field, how they train, how they work.”

The reality is that to reach any moral high ground, theyd need to take the lift first.... on tiptoes.

....there's no doubt Gerrard is the key. There is no obvious successor to this aspect of his role. Refs are no doubt influenced by top players, especially if a non-confrontational relationship is established.

I'll never forget that Clattenburg derby when he got Tony Hibbert sent off....and he grew up playing football with him in Huyton. Alan Stubbs even mentioned it in the papers...
On the penalty Stubbs added: "The referee went to book Tony Hibbert holding a
yellow card, Steven Gerrard walked past him (the referee) and it changed to a
red.
We saw the replays. That's disappointing. We were 1-0 at half-time and on
top, we had control of the game."

No wonder Ive got a bleedin pacemaker.

....yep, that's a classic example but the more recent game were we lost to the deflected Mascharano goal is another. If you get a chance watch a re-run. From the start Maschareno and Gerrard get into the ref, mainly regarding Cahill. They clearly targeted him as the main threat. Very clever, very subtle. At half-time Neville approaches the ref to have a word but is waved to the dressing room in stern fashion. The ref then walks off with his arm around Mascharano.

It doesn't happen by accident, its a strategy.
