How can the ref be in 'control' while all thats going on? sure its "yes sir no sir" when getting a stiff talking to, but apart from non ref badgering the game is worse and steeped in the dark arts.

Forgetting footballers shove each other, punch each other, kick each other, stamp on feet and legs, use elbows, use heads, and thankfully we have got rid of the biter.

There is ultimate respect for the ref in rugby. There's common sense and an understanding that it should always prevail. Yes, attacks happen, but they in which they are dealt with is exemplary and shows an understanding for the culture of the game and the spirit it is played within. Discretion is a key aspect and the ref is trusted to make the right decisions by the authority.

Players don't mess with the referee. They don't treat him like an idiot and they don't mouth of at him with expletives. Even when he is mediator, they listen to him.

If he doesn't want to indulge an individual he is sent away and his captain is summoned. That's the bottom line.

There's no surrounding the ref.

I love football, but as someone who plays rugby week in, week out...the respect is far more entrenched in that game and football is a long, long way from ever getting anything like that.

HAHa and after, well nearly always. Even shake hands with the officials after calling them all the names under the sun.

Citing pretty much has eradicated that at the top level, only an idiot does it now as players know they will get caught and get banned.

Whatever you think about rugby you half to admire how quickly they adopt technology to make like easier on the refs. Every Rugby match on TV match has a TMO - every football match has a can of shaving foam.

I'll never forget that. One of the most disgusting episodes in football ever. About 4/5 Utd players deserved to be sent off in that incident. Keane and Giggs foremost.
