I know it's probably been commented on but I couldn't believe the match report on bbc about Liverpool's win. 'it brings back misty memories of those magical legendary European nights'. I mean....that is supposed to be the neutral place ffs!

That being said, rugby refs do actually get some decisions right which does separate them from the foobtall ones. There is ultimate respect for the ref in rugby. There's common sense and an understanding that it should always prevail. Yes, attacks happen, but they in which they are dealt with is exemplary and shows an understanding for the culture of the game and the spirit it is played within. Discretion is a key aspect and the ref is trusted to make the right decisions by the authority.
Players don't mess with the referee. They don't treat him like an idiot and they don't mouth of at him with expletives. Even when he is mediator, they listen to him.
If he doesn't want to indulge an individual he is sent away and his captain is summoned. That's the bottom line.
There's no surrounding the ref.
I love football, but as someone who plays rugby week in, week out...the respect is far more entrenched in that game and football is a long, long way from ever getting anything like that.
To be fair, it reminds me of the plot to 300 (pound squad)... Ludo the plucky 300 face the millions of Liverpool... and lose. End story.Would Hollywood fall for a script though where the plucky hero had spent 500million against the evil part timers from ludo with a budget of 78p and a packet of tangy tom's crisps? The ending is more depressing than Seven ffs.
Thanks lads.
That needs to change and soon - although you don't need me to tell you that. It's like you've got an inferiority complex when you play them. I hope Martinez will change that because if Villa can win at Anfield most years, you definitely can.
Liverpool have a world class player in Steven Gerrard, the most allround central midfielder in English football since Graeme Souness. The likes of Robson, Charlton and Scholes were all top midfielders, but none of them were allrounders like Gerrard and Souness. Alan Hansen once said Gerrard was ''Souness with pace''. I don't care what anyone says. Graeme Souness was a cut above Bobby Charlton. Souness may have been brutal, but he also had an abundance of skill.
Their sycophantic schmoozing of refs also oozed into other areas. Exhibit A...four of them personifying shameless....Hughes with his arm round her shoulder. No wonder she supported the Euro ban that knackered us !
