ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

It's just utter bollo.... - sorry you start from the premise that serious foul play warrants stopping play. Deliberate handball = penalty and accidental does not. Part two of the handball debate is "what exactly is the hand?" since it appears to stretch to anywhere below the armpit for football related "handballs" which is plain rubbish frankly. As far as contact goes - well what are defenders supposed to do - be frightened to challenge for the ball? It's ridiculous when a player brushes over a defenders leg or the keeper's hands and a penalty is awarded - total nonsense and it's about time they sorted it out.

FTR from the 1966 World Cup Final. In the words of Hugh McIlvanney: "Bobby Charlton, moving through on Moore's pass early in the second half, fell after being tackled by Schulz, but the claims for a penalty were understandably half-hearted"

Those were the days eh?

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp once decided not to sign a striker at Borussia Dortmund because he did not like the way he celebrated, according to the German club's marketing director.

"Then he saw him playing and he scored a goal. He was watching how he was celebrating his goal and said: 'This is not a guy for Dortmund. He is celebrating for himself and not the club.'

Has Sturridge done that stupid dance yet this year?

That's just it though, the defender didn't dive in. He made out he was going to jump in, thought better of it and pulled out. His sliding knee then touches Benteke and he goes down. I'm not even concerned about whether Benteke dived or not, the fact is that the defender did not FOUL him. He made no tackle, and he made no physical motion towards Benteke. It was a collision of limbs, nothing more. How that can be deemed a foul is beyond me. Are we saying that if two players touch each other (oo er) in any way, then that's 'contact' and automatically a foul? It's insanity, and it's not the first time we've seen this. For it to be a genuine foul, the defender has to be trying to intercept the ball, and in failing to do so, has grounded the attacker. None of that was evident yesterday.

But even on a wider point - 94 mins?! Why are refs hell bent on giving the most contentious of penalties so incredibly late in the game? Do they not see how much it courts controversy? The ref didn't even see it, and had to rely on what the linesman said - hardly clear cut then! Just don't give them and let everyone walk off content with a draw. I'll bet if it wasn't given Benteke wouldn't have protested much, given he knows that it wasn't really a penalty anyway.

But I bet that Hendo would have told the officials to eff off in a rather intimidating manner. How does he get away with it?
