2022/23 Ellis Simms

This isn't strictly true though is it? The bar to get into the Everton team is low, but the bar to have an impact in this division is somewhat higher.

We need a level above what we've got now, not marginally better than Maupay (spoiler alert, but unfortunately I don't think the kid is even that).
No, everything i said is absolute fact. I never mentioned the level to have an impact etc. Feel free to read again. We all move at different speeds

The reaction stems from the fact that we play with one centre forward. Starting the season, we had three options. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Maupay and Rondon.

If Simms has been brought back to play the handful of minutes that Rondon did, that doesn’t make any sense for his development when he was getting regular game time at Sunderland.

It seems far more likely (to me anyway) that he is being brought back to play a bigger role, perhaps the role Maupay currently plays as back up to Dominic Calvert-Lewin. That indicates we’re not signing a new centre forward because we won’t use Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Simms, Maupay AND a new CF unless we’re changing system.
The ‘his development’ line doesn’t really stack up to be honest. The lad’s 22 this week and has 60 odd senior games under his belt. It’s not like we’re talking about throwing a 17 year old to the wolves. Staying at Sunderland for another 5 months or coming back here is not going to make or break his career, if he can’t make an impact now then there’s very little reason to think he would suddenly have become an option next season by virtue of playing a dozen more games.

I think he’s been brought back because we’re struggling for goals and they think he’s at least an option to make an impact and get us one. I don’t envisage him starting more than once or twice but can see him getting plenty of sub appearances. I might be wrong obviously, but I don’t really see the point in jumping to conclusions about the entire window based on what seems a fairly logical decision.

He has a similar record to the other Championship strikers we’ve been linked with so I think it’s sensible to recall Simms before we spend money on any of them, it’s also an option that we can take on January 1st, rather than waiting until later in the window.

We still need more people in after this but if this was an option, I think we had to take it in our situation.
Very sensible take.

Probably shouldn't have gone out ob loan in retrospect.

Hope he comes in and shows good quality and pinches a few vital goals. Hopefully as part of an improvement of the front line with a more proven striker.

We need to give him a chance and encourage him not slag him off straightaway. Dcl will not stay fit for long if at all and Maupay has had enough chances without delivering. As for a new signing that is obviously not imminent.

If you're happy with no worse than the current lot then that's cool, but Everton need better otherwise they're getting relegated.

It's a lot of pressure to heap on Simms, a back-up striker for a Championship team.

I believe that we may well bring in another striker at some stage during the window, probably on loan.
Ellis Simms is being recalled because the club cannot rely on DCL remaining fit for the rest of the season and we need cover in that area. This I think is sensible. Simms is well experienced in senior football and should be at least able to show if he has the potential to make a Premiership footballer.

I also believe that above all we are trying to sign a creative midfielder, a genuine number 10 as we probably are the most predictable team in the league

Again, you’re debating against yourself. I merely wished the lad well and said he can’t do any worse than what’s there. What i am or am not happy with never came in to it

We can speculate as much as we like about him but until he's had some proper minutes on the pitch, it's all just hot air.

Sending him out on loan when we were so short up front was a ridiculous decision.

Hi mate, like a couple of other posters have said Simms isn't a target man and he is pretty average at holding the ball up, you look at his height and would think that would be his game but it's not. He comes alive with the ball at his feet around the box and his a real eye for goal.

I'm pretty gutted as he had just really settled into the team and I think is getting better with every game, I just hope he plays as if he doesn't it's a bit of a waste for all parties.

Anyway good luck for the rest of the season.
YOu've probably seen him a lot more than me matey but when I say hold up, I also mean just occupying defences with movement and being a danger. The only danger we possess is sat in the director's box.

Maybe we are planning to use the loans on a wide player and a playmaker type

Has there been any feedback from Sunderland fans on whether or not he's been any good? Seems on the surface like a more successful loan than Gordon, Barkley had
I think the important part of bringing him back is that Everton can reloan Ellis, at the end of January, back to Sunderland, I think he is back for now in case we don’t land another striker in January.
