2022/23 Ellis Simms

Personally I’d rather we fixed the glaring lack of creativity in the team so that we weren’t reliant on a target man and could actually get some use out of the attackers we do have. Throwing more money down the drain to bring in someone to score 5 goals and be a big lump for a bit wouldn’t be my preference but yeah obviously we need to do something. A lot of the talk in here and on twitter etc is just catastrophising though, there are so many things to call the club out on but I genuinely just don’t think this is even close to being one.
I think that is much harder to do and goes against the pragmatic approach we should be taking this season

It takes a lot longer to implement a passing style through the lines than to be direct and hard to beat.

I believe the club dont make this decision to recall Simms if they planned to sign a forward. I think its utter desperation and I dont see any logical explanation why Thelwell is qualified to be our DOF.

We need goalscorers. If we dont get them then we go down. Either the board act in the next few days or they are treating the fans with total contempt.

He will come back, score a goal in his first game maybe even two, then do nothing for the rest of the season or more than likely get injured.

Yeah its a good move, skint club has a player scoring goals for another side, its something we have to do
It’s hard to believe he isn’t a better option off the bench than Rondon , before we released him or Cannon therefore it makes sense . If he contributes a goal or even an assist or two it could be vital . For godsake even giving us an out ball late on might make a difference, thanks to years of mismanagement our squad is an embarrassment so anything that strengthens is it ok with me .

I did point out his lack of proper experience in this area when he joined, he is more known as a youth guy.

Recall him now and see if he can have an impact. If not they will then be forced to get a striker in at the end of the window. It’s a massive gamble. Pick up no points this month and we’re more than likely gone.

Watched bits of him this season, has been playing well in most games or is it just a few glimpses of decent play
He’s developed this season and is now a good championship striker.
I just think it’s a shame for the kid as he’s playing in a very young team who create lots of chances at a level he can compete in.
I wish him the very best of luck but I think it’s too early for him to play in the PL, especially (with all due respect) a team who aren’t creating much

Good finishing ability, good strike on him, but looks so painfully slow. Lack work ethic without the ball which i am not sure lampard is going to like. Not sure if he has the tools to compete in the premier league.

I’m not talking about changing the style of play. I’m talking about bringing someone in who consistently shows quality and composure in the final third, because that’s what we lack. We can’t just keep throwing money at short term solutions and then find ourselves in the same position next year, we need to think about what we’re trying to do. If bringing simms back allows us to concentrate on bringing in a quality wide player or someone to play off the front then it’s absolutely the right thing to do in my eyes. Signing che adams for £20m isn’t the way to get out of this mess.

I think there’s been a massive overreaction to this, it does seem like some people just want to complain/panic whatever the club do.

If he’s being brought back to be heralded as the saviour and start every game between now and the end of the season then we’re in big trouble. If - as seems much more likely - he’s been brought back to be another attacking option off the bench with the capability to put the ball in the net, it’s really difficult to see what exactly the downside is supposed to be.

The reaction stems from the fact that we play with one centre forward. Starting the season, we had three options. DCL, Maupay and Rondon.

If Simms has been brought back to play the handful of minutes that Rondon did, that doesn’t make any sense for his development when he was getting regular game time at Sunderland.

It seems far more likely (to me anyway) that he is being brought back to play a bigger role, perhaps the role Maupay currently plays as back up to DCL. That indicates we’re not signing a new centre forward because we won’t use DCL, Simms, Maupay AND a new CF unless we’re changing system.

Bringing in that type of player would require us to become better at playing football. That means a change of style.
