2022/23 Ellis Simms

There are plenty more ahead of him for cannon duty that's for sure!

I don't think Rashford is that good a barometer either as although he is in terrific form he isn't that good and it has took him to 25 to get to this level.

We have done well with young academy strikers in the past though I am going back here but Jeffers, Chadwick, Vaughan and Anichebe all proved themselves useful at one time or another, hopefully Simms contributes from now until May as beggars can't be choosers.
I think Simms would be pretty happy to have a career like Rashford's though! He'd be happy to have a career like Maupay let's be honest. He can definitely be useful for us, he has the ability to take chances if they come to him which is more than most of the rest of them can say. I would not be at all surprised to see him getting on the scoresheet a couple of times because that's what he's good at. That doesn't change the fact that isn't harsh or unfair or kneejerk to say that he's probably not going to be a good PL striker in the near future though, it's a fair analysis of what he's showed in his career so far and the way he's clearly been viewed by the coaches and managers who've worked with him.

What, Rashford was banging goals in in the Premier League when he was 19?

I agree with that he looks like he can finish but whether we can create enough chances for him to do so is another story.

Ultimately any CF has to be primarily judged on the chances he takes vs those he misses. The frustrating thing for Simms is he’s yet to be presented with a decent chance to even begin to judge him on. That’s a reflection of him starting two difficult away games, but in those games a reflection of the team as a whole.

He may well not be good enough but he’ll feel he’s not even been given an opportunity to show his primary strength.

His form now is the best of his career and he has had to reach his mid 20s to get to that level. Last year he only got 5 goals and was being slaughtered by the Man United fans.
Yeah cuz he scored 10+ the previous few years (20+ if we go by all goals) lol

Going by league only:
First season 5 in 11 - good debut/start for someone who was 18 years old;
Second season 5 in 32; 19 y/o
Third 7 in 32 (both seasons was with Mourinho who saw him solely as a winger for some reason); 20 y/o
10 in 33; 21 y/o
17 in 31; 22 y/o
11 in 37; 23 y/o
4 in 25; 24 y/o
12 in 23 (currently). 25 y/o

Can you see the outlier? Cuz it's not this season, just saying.

Simms isn't reaching this level sadly. As I've said here multiple times - he's not a prem footballer, wasn't at Hearts in the SPL, wasn't at Sland in the Championship. He'll probably do better if we actually set up to attack and he has DCL or someone actually mobile and fighting next to him, but he's just not the type of grock we need.

he played awful but he was out of his depth, dropped in the deep end. and no other player played a decent game either so I will give him the benefit of the doubt. maybe if one of our midfield 3 is out and dyche wants to play a 4 4 2, he can play simms and maupay together, assuming DCL is injured or being given a rest

On loan at Hearts last season could see he was nowhere near prem standard. His hold up play is one of the weakest ares of his game, touch is poor, isn’t great in the air for the size of him and isn’t a real physical type. He’s good with balls played over the top to run on to, good in the box and if he’s getting chances created for him is a good (but not amazing) finisher.

Lawrence Shankland is a far better player and nobody would want him leading the line for us.

He isn’t going to be suited to the lone striker role having to occupy 2 centre backs with the ball being hoofed up to him. Shame really as Maupay is equally unsuited and DCL is crocked. We don’t really have a forward suited to Dycheball, he probably had better options as Burnley manager ?

This season Rashford has looked better than ever and is looking his teams best threat. His previous record was decent enough but he now looks like he belongs in a top 4 team after bursting through as a teenager.

I guess it helps playing with Eriksen and Fernandes instead of McNeil and Gray!

As for Simms he will have a career in the game and I dare say we will make a bit of money on him when the time comes to sell him. I agree we need to play him upfront in a pair and it should bring help Maupay as well as he looks like a child playing up front on his own.

To be fair to Ellis Simms, the 'Derby' was not the ideal game for him, and he looked off the pace and a little uncertain. I'm going to say that Sean Dyche got this one wrong and should have started with the more experienced and snidey Neal Maupay from the start. Introducing Simms later on to give him a feel for the game may have been a better way to go. But that's easy to say the day after the match.

I think there was a few reasons he started Simms over Maupay.

1) He's closer to DCL stylistically
2) Judging off what we saw in the Arsenal game, I don't think Dyche was best pleased with Maupay. He roared at him on a number of occasions, including when he had a mad pot shot from 35 yards rather than keeping the ball.
3) Slight shot to nothing + give the lad a potential confidence boost because we need the numbers

I worry about Maupay. He's similar to the lad Vydra that Dyche had at Burnley. A decent foil, but can't lead the line. Could work well with DCL but can't see us going for him and Simms. You're giving up two positions for players who probably aren't up to it.
