Capello had a dreadful squad and Sven was hardly an elite manager. I’m all for trying a foreign manager with an actual track record and also a half decent squad to speak of.

Southgate will show us when he goes into club management how good a manager he is. Will also be interesting to see the tournament draws Tuchel gets in comparison.
The 2010 squad was made to look much worse by its own poor performance IMO. Capello totally lost his head before that tournament but the squad was not that bad. An example team from that squad:

James
Johnson Terry King Cole
Barry
Lampard Gerrard
J Cole Rooney Milner

And yet here’s the actual team that started against Germany plus subs. Nowhere near the quality of the squad we currently have. Full of absolutely bang average nothing Premier League players.

However we still would’ve got to the final if we’d been given the sort of draws Southgate was routinely given.

Apart from Upson that was not that bad a team for the time. Cole, Terry, Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney all world class players. Barry a good international player if not world class. Likewise Defoe. Very bad keeper and Milner/Johnson quite average but it was far from a poor squad. Capello made a balls of it.

Defoe was nowhere near world class, come on  Glen Johnson was a bang average player. David James was crap and 40 at the time. It was, I’ll say it again, absolutely nowhere near the level of the team we currently have and nowhere near the quality of the top international teams of the time. A lot of our top players at the time like Cole, Terry and Lampard were past their peak too.

Look at the state of the bench and the players we were bringing on to try and change a game. Shaun Wright-Phillips and Emile Heskey to come on rather than Cole Palmer and Phil Foden. You cannot be serious with your argument here.

I said Defoe was a good international level player but not world class and said the same about Johnson and James. Cole, Terry and Lampard were between 30-32 and had just won the double with Chelsea and would go on to win a CL 2 years later. My argument was just that the squad was not that bad and Capello could've done much better with it. At least to the QF. Hard to argue, after a good qualification campaign, that he didn't balls that world cup up a little bit. He came up with that weird Capello index on the eve of the tournament, kept the players in that isolated camp on a weird farm, sat with his backroom staff cheering on Italy games on TV. I think just putting it all down to a poor squad absolves him a bit.

I find it incredibly hard to even care about England, and couldnt care less what the game is (Bar if our players play, and then hope they come back ok). And dont know how Club fans support another team, as in effect that is what it is. For me it will only ever be Everton
What, what nonsense is that, supporting your national team is like supporting another club.
