England Under 21 Euro 2015 Thread

Given all the academys, perfect pitches, great money, basicly everything just to focus on football English grown players are still worse than lads taken from latin america's favelas or Balkan streets. Maybe that's the reason ? The lack of character ?

Why do we start every tournament like 0-0 in the first game will be some kind of tremendous result? Our mentality is ridiculous and until we get rid of the yes men in charge that mentality won't change.

You can't compare International management to club management. Totally different mindsets and time with the players.

Ultimately England's players aren't good enough. They always have one or two, sometimes 4 to 6 but there's always one or two weak links and that gets exposed.

The overall standard in countries like Italy, Spain and Germany etc is much higher.

.....not so sure, Jack Charlton got a relatively ordinary Irish team to the latter stages of a World Cup and it wasn't that long ago that Greece won the Euro's.

England's midfield was shocking. Truly truly awful. Their defence wasn't much better and even Stones' had a 'mare.
midfield is always England's problem. No ability to control a game there.

They played exactly the same way as all England teams try to. It just looks awkward for whatever reason.

We are so far away from being on the right track it's incredible, Hodgson still being in charge says it all.

Massive improvement on 2011 and 2013. Sad to say but true.

Our Under 17s won their Euro's last summer and the u16s won the Montiagu tournament this April.

Our lads do have talent, it just seems we lose our way (especially mentally) as they get older.
That's it. U17 is more of a level playing field, youngsters from all countries play youth level football and England do well. But when they get to the age groups just above kids from other countries start getting 1st team football in their top flights whilst ours are lucky to get games in the championship. The ones who do start playing in the prem get fast-tracked straight to the full squad because our seniors are awful.

....there is still a lot of the 'old school tie' in evidence at St Georges and Southgate appointment reflects it.
They should be taking the most promising coaches from whatever courses they put on at SGP and putting them in charge of our youth sides, paying them enough to want to do it. There's that guy Blake (I think) in charge of the U19s, who have always been crap despite having some talented players. Hard to see what value he is adding. I think the U20s have Aidy Boothroyd in charge of them FFS. You could'nt find a bigger hoof merchant if you tried.

That's half the problem though, we have no football identity anymore. Teams like Spain have their passing style, Italy always build from defence, Brazil and Argentina have the flair and then you get to England??? We don't know who or what we are anymore in International football. It's all well and good having these 'wonderful' facilities but the management/coaching side is abysmal. None of our age groups play the same way. We have coaches at every level with differing philosophies. What needs to happen is when Hodgson goes, whoever comes in also picks his 'team' to coach England at all age levels, so when players move from one group to the next the philosophy is the same, instead of at the moment having hoofball merchants coaching one team, another guy trying go go down the passing route at another age group and so on.

We as a country are stuck in the dark ages when it comes to football coaching/philosophies and ideas.

Agree with this.
We are so focused on trying to copy someone else's blueprint ever since the late 90's we wanted to copy bloomfonteign (spelling), then we wanted to copy spains ticka tacka, now we want to go the german route.
England need to play abit of a "swashbuckling" in your face style. That is how all our successful teams have played and that is how are players are built to play.
First two games having 3 centre mids all wanting to be the "quarter back" xavi/pirlo was so frustrating

I was talking to my mate about this last night are young players dont seem to have that will to win at any cost.
look at Barkley six foot odd big built and tackles like a five year old girl , watch him go fo a ball in the air its embarrassing he actually looks scared of the ball, maybe the get it to easy to young with the money ect

Don't know if it has been mentioned in this thread but the commentator last night said that the Italy team had around 260 serie A games between them last season, were as England had about 120 odd.
The side yesterday still all looked like a bunch of nancy boys up against men

I think the Germans style is the one we should copy if we are going to copy one. They have similar climate to ours etc, play aggressive pressing off the ball with fast counter attacks etc.
