I detect a cooling off in support for this England team here.

Has the stories of the Danish fans experience at Wembley and Southgate's "they bombed our chippy" comments taken the shine off them?
No mate. People are intelligent enough to want the England football team to win because (a) They love football and (b) it’s their country and to see all the jingoistic hoo ha and misplaced patriotism for what it is. It is maddening to see people who usually despise football and it’s fans jumping on the bandwagon but they will be gone in a day or so.
And Football won’t.
Plenty of “Football is lovely again, pity about the beastly fans” floating about in the Tory press. Well, they despise us and I despise them, but it doesn’t stop me getting behind the team and they’ll have soon found something else to froth and lie about and all the hangers on will have gone back to tennis and sudoku. C’mon England.

I will surprise you mate.

I will pop my headphones on and watch something else.
Let all the screaming and shouting, fireworks etc go off and catch up with the game later on.
Lads who have been on the ale since lunchtime for an 8pm kick off really isn’t my scene anymore.

A guy I know sent me a picture of a jaegerbomb in Spoons at 8.30 this morning lol that’s a long ol’ day.

There is no reason whatsoever to say it had any link to a war. The '66 final, yes no doubt, not now.

The straight bat response should have been we all want to do well and the country wants to see us progress and go on to win something and they passionately get behind us.
Paradoxically (seemingly), there was little or no mention of the war in the media in the build up to the 66 final and the German national anthem was not booed at a time when the war would clearly have been fresher in the memory.

Possibly (probably), due to the fact that England hadn't suffered several defeats by the German team at that time and England was prospering back then while Germany still hadn't developed into the economic power it was to become. Whereas, when those things happened, the tabloids and little Englanders felt the need to whip up a jingoistic frenzy to remind the uppity krauts (and everyone else) who was boss.
During bad times, populists will appeal to the baser instincts of the populace.

Haven't read the article so can't comment directly on what Southgate said. However, on the face of it, I can't argue with your second paragraph.
