Euro2020 Knock Out Rounds

I think it's because England play like Everton when they haven't got possession. They go deeper and deeper and then fall to pieces. Spain would've had about 85% possession against a Southgate team.

I think England were forced back against their wishes for most of the first half, but the second half they chose to drop deep conceding that they were the much inferior force.

At home and with a lead for almost 70 minutes, that was a pathetic attempt to win a major final. It required courage on the ball and a manager capable of setting the opposition a far greater problem.

Well my Everton has treated me very bad in the last few years, the odd good moment, I will give you that, but generally the marriage has been pretty miserable ;)
Well look i got my Mrs nocked up at 14. I was a mentalist that would not be tied down i ran around breaking the law been a right numpty deep into my 20s. 33 now and got engaged a few months ago to her and its a better relationship. She's my club. I was chosen.

Don't give up mate.

Why did he take the penno off DCL the other week and then get subbed so he didn’t have to take one last night ?

Proper bad management all round that in my opinion.
Don't start me on the management topic.
He's got a lot to answer to with the way he operated last night. But right now he's bombproof.

Wow.

Dare not ask how old you were at the time..

Goals scored: 142 (2.78 per match), ’twas a really fruitful tourney in that regard.

Attendance: 1,099,278 (21,554 per match) not bad either, especially after covid nightmare

Thanks to all on GOT, was a pleasure for me, see you in November 2022 for the WC

Southgate really dropped the ball in tryinh to defend a lead for 80 mins

Then to put a 19 year old kid as the last taker, after he has spoken before about how missing a penalty has impacted his life

Bad in game managment

….some embarrassing posts on here last night, blaming more experienced players who didn’t take a penalty when it was clear when those late substitutions were made that Southgate was selecting his penalty takers.

it’s clear and it’s sad when folk let personal agenda’s against players get in the way of reality.

I'll ask you this though Eggs, and I don't just mean that specific substitution but more generally, are you a fan of bringing people on in the final minute to take penalties?

This might be me being old fashioned but I am not sure bringing people on, who's 1st touch will be the penalty, and have probably been sat watching a very nerve wracking game for 2.5 hours, taking in the atmosphere etc is the most sensible ploy. Even if you stick them on for 10 minutes, just to get them into the flow of the game, that would make more sense to me. I didn't understand that at all, and if I'm honest it felt like a bit of a rash move, away from manager who has been very calm and measured all tournament.

I'm sure people were emotional last night and hopefully everyone can have a more considered discussion today. I did find that substitution odd. I'm sure it works sometimes but the process feels really wrong to me.

I expect the Championship-level centre midfield of Rice and Phillips to be exposed today. The quality Italy have in the middle will have those two wondering what day it is for the 90 minutes.

England have been really fortunate not to see those two journeymen swamped so far. They are two players out of their depth by such a margin it's laughable.
Well that tactic finally did come home to roost last night.

Rice was outstanding on the night, but playing two of the same type of pick-pocket CMs - with almost zero creative quality on the ball - was never going to work against an Italian midfield 3 of such incredible quality.

That was down to Southgate. He bottled it big time. I noticed during the game (think it's when chiesa was injured) that Mancini was barking orders at his players. The England players were just stared at each other and looked defeated. A better manager would have seen the pressure mounting at about the 60 minute mark and switched things up.

The other thing that stood out was not one England player commited tactical fouls to break the Italian play up. Italy did it eclvery time we looked like we might break. Unfortunately, English sports stars aren't smart enough. I used to say the same about Ricky hatton. He was a good fighter but an average boxer. He wasn't smart enough to adapt and change tactics, depending on his opponent or how the fight was going. It's why he was embarrassed by the top tier fighters.

Oh, I will never give up (I hope we are still talking about football :D).

I am an Everton, Barrow & England fan. That will never change, regardless of what happens on or off the pitch.

I agree that it was down to the manager but I would add, why would a manager decide to put a 19 year old who doesn't take penalties for his club on the most important penalty in a cup final? That says to me that the manager is clueless and/or more experienced players have convinced him they aren't up to it.

I saw Southgate consult with Graham Jones on the touchline...then put his hands back in his mac pockets and gaze out at the pitch again.

He froze.
