is it definitely 5th and 6th that get europe?

Yes. The place that would normally go to League Cup winners is given to 6th since Citeh will qualify for better quality Europe via the league. It's not like the FA Cup where the runnerup gets it instead.

It's kind of crap Europe though, 3rd qualifying round of Europa. Have to go through two rounds of home/away ties to reach the group stage

I'm retarded. If spurs pip us to 5th (somehow), are we in Europe or not finishing 6th?

Finishing 6th gets us in Europe. 5th & 6th are both in the Europa.

If Hull wins the Cup:
Hull straight through to the group stage, 5th would play a play-off game in August, 6th would play a qualifier in July, then a play-off game in August.

If Arsenal wins the Cup:
5th goes straight through to the group stage, 6th would play a play-off game in August, Hull would play a qualifier in July, then a play-off game in August.

I hope Arsenal win and we finish 5th. We'll probably balls up a play-off match against some no name Slovak team!

That's kind of the rub. Given our UEFA coefficient, we probably wouldn't get a no-name Slovak team in the playoff. We'd get Twente or Internazionale or somebody along those lines.

You know, a real club from a real league.

Was just thinking about our UEFA coefficient, if we finish 5th and go straight into the group stage will this benefit our coefficient more than finishing 6th and beating a couple of teams to get into the group stage?

Yes. According to Wikipedia (it's sourced):

Qualifying round results are only taken into account if the team is eliminated in one of the rounds. Otherwise, the qualifying round results are taken into account only for the calculation of the association's coefficient and are halved. The clubs do not receive any points for elimination in the Champions League third qualifying round or the play-off because those teams move to the Europa League and receive points from participation in that competition.

Wouldn't mind getting a club like Inter, its win win IMO.
If we lose we don't have the extra games, if we win crack on and win the whole thing. Wouldn't be embarrassing if we lost either and we would also get an away day to the san siro.

Cool, Cheers mate, I just found this on UEFA.com:- Basically you get 2 coefficient points for getting into the group stages i.e finishing 5th, if you finish 6th/7th or are runner up in the cup you get zero points until you get to the group stage where you get your 2 points the same as 5th. If you get knocked out in the qualifying rounds you get points depending on which stage your eliminated at (as below)

UEFA Europa League points system First qualifying round elimination – 0.25 points
Second qualifying round elimination – 0.5 points
Third qualifying round elimination – 1 point
Play-off elimination – 1.5 points
Group stage win – 2 points
Group stage draw – 1 point

Since 2009/10, clubs have been guaranteed a minimum of two points if they reach the group stage and are awarded an additional point if they get to the quarter-finals, semi-finals or final.

*Penalty shoot-outs do not affect the calculation system.

Coefficient calculation Clubs' coefficients are determined by the sum of all points won in the previous five years, plus 20% of the association coefficient over the same period (33% before 2009).

These rankings will be updated after each round of UEFA club competition matches.[/QUOTE]
