Indeed. The point of the clubs was to give back to the community.

Used to rely on Donations from the community too. As well as people going the match always went in smart attire (suits etc).

Only the English don't take the Europa seriously, everywhere else enjoy and welcome it. It's a chance to improve the brand, sign higher profile players and now most importantly, it's a competition that can be a route into the UEFA CL.

I am very confident we will be in this tournament next season as I think finishing 6th place will be the worst we can do. Although finishing 7th is still quite a possibility, I think we will finish either 5th or 6th.

If we finish 6th we enter the Europa league at the third qualifying round. The first leg will be played on the 31st July and the second to be played on 7th August. If we get through that round we then go into the playoff round.

If we finish 5th we enter the tournament at the playoff stage with the first game to be played on 21st August (the following Thursday after the first PL fixture) and the second leg to be played on 28th August. If we get through this stage we enter the group stage with the first game to be played on 18th September.

And if we make it all the way we will play the final in Warsaw, Poland so hopefully a cheap couple of nights out and a glorious Everton win.

Currently we have no squad for this competition in my opinion. There are many areas that will require additions.

2 central midfielders
2 centre forwards
A winger
An attacking midfielder
Possibly another RB?

This will be a good opportunity to see players like John Lundstram, George Green, Conor McAleny, Hallam Hope, Luke Garbutt, Tyias Browning, Chris Long, Shane Duffy play more minutes as I think the squad will be stretched and it'll be a chance for a selection of those players to showcase what they've got in the earlier rounds.

I can only see this competition benefitting Everton as it will attract players to the club and bring more finances and more game time. I don't see it affecting league form like it has with some teams.

It looks likely it's happening and I for one am excited to be playing in Europe again.

Onward Evertonians!

In order to progress in the league i.e finish top 4 and manage to do well in Europe (if we get there) we need to bolster the squad with quality/key players mainly

Striker or 2 - Lukaku would be great but if we get him we need another. We need two quality 15+ goals strikers in our ranks naismith and kone are not that

#10 - we need a creative midfielder to play instead of osman. Tadic would be ideal if reports are true and we are interested but in all honesty i havt seen much of him. pienaar would be better in behind the striker and that would allow us to bring someone else in on the wing.

Centre back younger distin (left peg)

Howard
Coleman Jags ? Baines
Mirallas McCarthy Barry ?
?
Lukaku

The mcCarthy/Barry partnership would be alternated with Gibson.

As i finish my post i realise we are at least 3/4 1st X1 quality players away before next season begins.

Less teams = less games = less tickets sold = less money. Won't happen, though I agree in principle

I don't think it works like that, my understanding is that in the early rounds, clubs don't make much money, they only make money if they get out of the group and into the knockout phase.

This is because there are so many games, against little teams no one has heard of, so there is very little tv interest and low revenues from sponsors and advertising.

Therefore if you have less games, but more high profile ones, it could generate more revenue than the current format.

The question then is; what do you do with all the teams you exclude? Do you bring back another competition, like the Cup Winners Cup?

Always liked this tournament. Looking forward to when it gets more serious next season (Champions League should of been on offer from day one). Hopefully we are taking part.

No room for the boss in your team?

It's a stepping stone to the Champions League IMO....if you qualify for the CL without some tough experiences in the out-reaches of Europe on a Thursday night then you're taking an early bath. quite simply it's critical learning territory for Clubs with loftier ambitions a few seasons down the line

Two words to corroborate that.

Athletico is one of them.

Another team which supports this theory, the other way round, is Manchester City.

They went in the CL after not having played in Europe since Fido was a puppy.

And the first two years they tanked, knocked out in the group stages.
