European premier league bombshell.....

Announcement by end of this month envisaged to start as early as 2022, so announcement within ten days more or less.

It's FIFA backed and has the financial backing but the UEFA president spoke out against such an idea only this March - if it goes ahead then UEFA's money-spinner the champions league which has rights sold until 2024 is definitely dead. They can't run concurrently and without the big teams all the commercial and financial side of the champions league collapses. Commerce will go with the big shiny newcomer.

Another titanic UEFA Vs FIFA battle? With Platini's protege Gianni Infantino now head of FIFA you can guarantee this has involved some underhand stuff. He's shown with the senseless plans for ever increasing world cup expansion that money and profit still drives that organisation.

This is the breakaway league they threatened the head of the FA Greg Clarke with when he walked away from the big plan talks, it is in effect project Big Picture plan B. The furore won't be limited to here this time it'll be Europe wide. it is in effect a breakaway European super league, eventually their reserve teams will keep up appearances by competing domestically. It's a horrible plan but may be only leverage and noone has actually definitely signed up to it yet.

Just like the premier league those founder members (with no relegation for 20 years) will just become far too wealthy out of all proportion to those left, in finance terms they will be as the premier league clubs are now to say the smaller SPFL clubs, on a different planet. We will not be able to compete and even their reserves will be formidable. The future standing of domestic leagues including the lucrative premier league would be under threat.

So there will be a clash of interests between FIFA,UEFA,FA and the PL about validity,if and its a big if it happens FIFA will then want to introduce,African,Middle East,South American maybe Middle East or Southern hemisphere teams,3am kick offs, how is that all going to work out?

On the flip side if this does happen and the PL and other clubs pander to these greedy, competition killing clubs and allows them to stay in the PL then I’ll be done with football. It’s already disgusting enough.

Funny how this has come up again after ‘Project Big Picture’ was flatly rejected.

I can’t believe that Liverpool and Man U made those proposals and expected them to be accepted. The timing is too coincidental, plus with the Champions League restarting this week.

It’s basically: ‘you need us and this is what we’ll do if you don’t let us have our way’.

I couldn’t care less anyway. The big 4/6 have threatened to break away for years.

As this is all about money all participating teams will probably be guaranteed near to the kind of money only the winners of the C/L currently get and the prospect of a lot more the further they go in the competition.

For probably having to travel all over the world to play.

There is likely to be penalties from it too. Maybe they are unable to play in the CL/EL, or even barred from domestic leagues.

So, boiled down, you would have two European organisations.

FIFA. Invite only, no relegation, one competition, loads of cash. (for now).

or

UEFA. As is, less 18 clubs. Less cash, (for now).

I am not 100% certain that some of those 18 clubs would lose what they have for what they might get.

That. And incredibly bad feeling from a whole multitude of stakeholders in the game towards the new league. UEFA. National associations. Broadcasters. Who knows what that might lead into in terms of sanctions.

Logically I can't see how teams can play both. But taking a stand seems beyond PL/UEFA.

If they form this new league they are binning off the weaker C/L anyway.

There is only so much of a pie to go around. the European super league would eat into the premier league deal

True.

But I don't think it would be that much of a heavy blow. You think BT/Sky would invest all their money into 1 league based on 5 teams? (This is just UK rights).

BT paid £1.5billion for champions league rights for 3 years. The premier league in total was £9billion.

What it will do is open up more buyers to the table for this daft league - like your Amazon's etc. And also allow them to promote/play/do whatever money spinner they want outside the trappings of the domestic league.

It'll more likely have more money in it but not to the levels of domestic leagues IMO.

End of the day it's done for those clubs to protect their interest financially so they don't have to rely on their domestic league.

Let them all agree to play it and void all of their previous trophies they won under UEFA and when they leave England void all of the honours they won here too, erase any history they had in English football, ironically not one single one of them founders of the league that got them to where they are now, greedy rats.

If the strategy is for an eventual global super league that will in any way damage our domestic league(s), it's not worth discussing. The government would block it. Football is part of our culture and heritage and the Culture Secretary has already dismissed the big greed project. Part of the gov manifesto is for a fan's review. All the official club's fan group went against the initial plans and I have no doubt would do the same in any review. This is not a battle between the two red shites owners and the Prem, its clubs and the FA, it is against their current customers too.

It is not outside of the realm of possibility to envisage a situation in which an example has to be made of these two clubs (boards) to ensure any future investor does not get ideas about reshaping 'our' game. This would have to be something that had significant financial consequences, as well as perceptual.

For the successful teams like City and R.S, after they stop entering the League Cup and continue to play B teams in the F.A. Cup, this new completion would probably only add a managable maximum of 10 games to the season?

What no one has mentioned is the following:

1. If this comes to fruition, those in the European Super League would likely come hunting the best players of the other decent clubs in the Premier League, with the promise of playing in an enhanced competition AND wages that none of the remaining teams in the PL could match.

2. Agents, who are understandably saying nothing at present, are probably rubbing their hands with glee at the above prospect, and the multi-millions they would make as a result of '1' above.

Teams could be stripped of their best players entirely, and be left with the Tom Davies's of this world...
