European premier league bombshell.....

If this happens we are doomed. TV money for the PL would dwindle
How would we be doomed?

If all the top 6 leave the league and we stay we would be topping that competition.

Moshiri can still pay off the stadium out of pocket if he wanted to because FFP doesn't consider infrastructure investments.

We would lose some of our TV revenue and some of our players to the super league.

It wouldn't be a disaster.

For the successful teams like City and R.S, after they stop entering the League Cup and continue to play B teams in the F.A. Cup, this new completion would probably only add a managable maximum of 10 games to the season?

The travel is markedly different though. And as you say, they play their B team, which I doubt they are doing for this comp.

I'm happy for them to try their luck in a rival comp, but they shouldn't be allowed to draw money from the PL on top of this.

What no one has mentioned is the following:

1. If this comes to fruition, those in the European Super League would likely come hunting the best players of the other decent clubs in the Premier League, with the promise of playing in an enhanced competition AND wages that none of the remaining teams in the PL could match.

2. Agents, who are understandably saying nothing at present, are probably rubbing their hands with glee at the above prospect, and the multi-millioins they would make as a result of '1' above.

Teams could be stripped of their best players entirely, and be left with the Tom Davies's of this world...
Right but if that happens to everyone in our competition we would probably be in a better position than most to rebuild and win a league without them all in it.

We are making assumptions, but yes you'd think so. That may well incur legal challenges, and UEFA may invalidate the league. Who knows. I am pretty certain they won't be rolling out the carpet for them though!

Yep - but for now its all speculation. I rubbished it immediately, already not quite so sure

True.

But I don't think it would be that much of a heavy blow. You think BT/Sky would invest all their money into 1 league based on 5 teams? (This is just UK rights).

BT paid £1.5billion for champions league rights for 3 years. The premier league in total was £9billion.

What it will do is open up more buyers to the table for this daft league - like your Amazon's etc. And also allow them to promote/play/do whatever money spinner they want outside the trappings of the domestic league.

It'll more likely have more money in it but not to the levels of domestic leagues IMO.

End of the day it's done for those clubs to protect their interest financially so they don't have to rely on their domestic league.
You can imagine that these plans will include rights for the clubs to sell/stream the games.

If so the money that BT and Sky put into the game could easily be viewed as a war chest to keep the Prem and other national leagues as premium packages.

If they form this new league they are binning off the weaker C/L anyway.

It is getting binned. These games will be played on the same days as the Champions League dates to replace them.

So...weekend domestic. Midweek euro super guff.

Anyone who's not in this daft league will probably be in a new branded euro comp.

Which is what happens currently.

The question is, are the revenues there, to continue to allow them to spend that much more money?

Didn't wanna give you a like cos it may have seemed like I liked what you've written but I think you're correct. It would be bad for the premier league.

Announcement by end of this month envisaged to start as early as 2022, so announcement within ten days more or less.

It's FIFA backed and has the financial backing but the UEFA president spoke out against such an idea only this March - if it goes ahead then UEFA's money-spinner the champions league which has rights sold until 2024 is definitely dead. They can't run concurrently and without the big teams all the commercial and financial side of the champions league collapses. Commerce will go with the big shiny newcomer.

Another titanic UEFA Vs FIFA battle? With Platini's protege Gianni Infantino now head of FIFA you can guarantee this has involved some underhand stuff. He's shown with the senseless plans for ever increasing world cup expansion that money and profit still drives that organisation.

This is the breakaway league they threatened the head of the FA Greg Clarke with when he walked away from the big plan talks, it is in effect project Big Picture plan B. The furore won't be limited to here this time it'll be Europe wide. it is in effect a breakaway European super league, eventually their reserve teams will keep up appearances by competing domestically. It's a horrible plan but may be only leverage and noone has actually definitely signed up to it yet.

Just like the premier league those founder members (with no relegation for 20 years) will just become far too wealthy out of all proportion to those left, in finance terms they will be as the premier league clubs are now to say the smaller SPFL clubs, on a different planet. We will not be able to compete and even their reserves will be formidable. The future standing of domestic leagues including the lucrative premier league would be under threat.

The PL's only play would be to invalidate the league, not recognise it, and say anyone who participates has to leave the PL.

Hope 1 or 2 buckle. Probably look at options on incorporating Rangers/Celtic and the Scottish league is left field option to go alongside it.

To allow teams, to feather their own nest with EPL money, while working for a rival org would be really dumb.

They should have a response ready to go.

Basic math suggests this can't work. 38 for the PL, 30 for this league, and then any number for the cups and you're at a number of games that can't really be fulfilled. Real Madrid when they were playing CWC every year and winning the CL maxed out at about 60 and that was without playing the first team in a single Copa del Rey game.
