From Arteta's Girl on Big Soccer (and occasionally here, though we don't see her as often anymore). She posted this for the Americans on BS, so forgive the emphasis on LD. But I'm posting here anyway as she has some good insights on the game that I underlined since she was physically there, kudos to her for posting. Her opinion of course, but it's detailed, so thought it was relevant:
Ok, there was a few changes from the midweek game due to injury and the team lined up:
--------------------------Howard--------------------------
-----Coleman-----Heitinga------Distin-----Neville-----
---Donovan-----Fellaini-----Bilyaletdinov-----Gueye---
---------------Anichebe---------McFadden---------------
McFadden dropped deeper and Anichebe played a target man role.
We didn't play that well overall yet still created quite a number of good openings.
First goal came from an inswinging corner on the left that Landon took, the keeper came to punch and missed the ball through a crowd of players and it was straight onto Heitinga's head at the far post. It was a really great ball into the box (something we have been lacking).
We created some chances after that with Anichebe having a shot saved and McFadden both shooting and heading other chances just wide.
Tamworth started to come into the game through a mixture of some cheap losing of the ball and stupid free kicks. First Patterson (ex LA Galaxy!) broke from halfway and shot just wide from the edge of the box and then they had a few corners and another half chance or two but nothing of any real threat to our goal.
Earlyish (is that a word? ) into the second half, both Fellaini and Coleman went down injured at the same point, Coleman couldn't carry on but Fellaini did. Baines came on and we brightened up a little. He went in at LB and Neville moved to RB.
Landon then had a half chance, the ball was cut back to him about 15 yards out from goal towards the near post and he sort of flicked it first time with his left foot and it rolled just wide of the far post. Clever touch.
Just after that Drenthe came on for McFadden, this meant Landon moving to the left hand side to play just ahead of Baines as Drenthe slotted in on the right. Gueye moved more central. Stracqualursi was brought on to replace Anichebe too.
Bily had a powerful long range shot saved and the rebound fell kindly for them to clear, instead of to Stracq.
In the 79th minute, Drenthe won a penalty. It was probably a little harsh but I'd say it was a penalty. Baines buried it after a bit of chatter of who to take it, Drenthe/Bilyaletdinov both trying but Baines is number 1.
Tamworth threw everything forward and had a few free kicks and headers but again nothing really to threaten Timmy.
Landon then had a few more chances, firstly he clipped a beautiful curling shot from around 25 yards out onto the corner of the post/bar with the keeper well beaten. Then he looped a half chance over from the edge of the box (he was trying to lob it over the keeper I think).
Overall, we didn't play great, but credit to Tamworth they defended well, we put in quite a number of crosses and they cleared their lines really good.
With regards to Landon, along with Sylvain Distin, he was in my opinion our best player today. He picked up a LOT of loose balls on the edge of our own box from clearances and headers. He drove forward well and carried the ball pretty well, he was certainly positive with what he was trying to do.
I believe it's hard at the moment with all the players out and the difference in confidence between now and when he was here last, it'll be tougher but I noticed something that I thought was pretty interesting. Midway through the first half there were a few cheap turnovers in possession and a few players were getting frustrated with the lack of "wavelength" between players. LD was in there talking the whole time, communicating, trying to work it out and ways to improve the situation, like any good captain would.
I don't know whether I was being ignorant in his last stint but he was certainly taking more of a 'leader' standpoint in the team today, as opposed to maybe a more laidback and going with the flow of last time where we were a team flowing with big characters (Cahill/Arteta/Pienaar/Jagielka/Osman all players and huge characters, influential players that he played regularly with last time and weren't out there today). I don't think he felt the need to take such a role last time but I think he feels he has to step up here. That is how I saw it and was watching carefully today. I don't know, I just found it kind of interesting...
With regards to his actual play..he had a few chances and could have had a goal to add to his assist. He put a few good balls into the box. He also did some beautiful spreading of the play as a kind of pivot from wing to wing in a central attacking midfield role on the break. He did give the ball away a few times whilst in good positions on the break late on but I put that down to tiredness. 2x90minutes in 4 days is a lot to ask of him but he does it without any fuss. A top pro.
Distin was the only player who could really touch him as player of the match and most people I've spoken to have given it to one or the other.
Overall as a team, not very good but a win is a win and we are in the draw tomorrow (another game for LD). Timmy didn't have much to do really but dealt with a few good crosses under pressure. Landon, ok, could be better but still better than the rest.
