Frustrating loss, but a bit harsh on Moyes no? To be fair his starting lineup was exactly what many were asking for in this thread in the run up. And the injuries/lack of attacking options off the bench really limited him. Just seems like there aren't that many specific examples of what he should have done differently.

Granted maybe bringing Rodwell on earlier, & some growing Cahill auto-spot concerns. But in all honesty, in games like this at what point do you need to rely on your veterans & leaders to take the bull by the horns, step up, & grind out a result? Hard for me to place too much on Moyes here.

I do think this game highlights some of the depth issues as well as the clear difference Arteta makes. And, Yank bias aside, I couldn't help but think Mandon would have been a very nice option to have today. Then again, I suppose same could be said for some of the other absentees.

Some fair points. I think the players probably looked at the remaining fixtures and thought 'West Ham at home. Easter Sunday. We can have a day off that day.' I'm sure that Moyes wouldn't have been thinking that way, mind. The manager needed to liven his players up. I was expecting them to come out of the blocks in the second half, after a few motivational words from the gaffer, but they only got into second gear when West Ham scored.

Personally, I would have set the side out with Pienaar in the middle pulling the strings, Ossie tucking in from the right and Bily swinging some balls in from the left. Perhaps Moyes could have brought Rodwell on sooner because of his presence against Parker and Noble and to inject the dynamism that we were lacking?

I also think Yakubu should start over Saha next match.

As for the game today, we should have had it sewn up by half time, but credit to West ham, they kept on fighting and deserved their point. We certainly weren't terrible (in fact we looked quite impressive on rare occasions), but we never really looked settled, particularly at the back. As for the subs, the only issue I can see was the timing Of them rather than who came on/off.

Distin should have been sent off, but we should have had a penalty.

We were shat. They were shat. We were more shat than them.

End of!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A few thoughts on today,
The first half we were quite good, playing some nice football on the ground and getting a few crosses in, creating a goal and a few good chances. West Ham had their central midfielders coming over to the wings to help the fullback and winger deal with us, which worked to an extent. This did leave a bit of space in the middle and I thought if Arteta had been there in space we could have had the game out of sight quite early on.
The second half, I could only laugh. I hope the team weren't instructed to play long ball at half time, because it was our least effective tactic yet we employed it for about 20 minutes. This allowed West Ham to get a grip on the game, playing better football, on the ground and ultimately winning them corners, pressure and a goal. I can't say I saw their second very clearly, it was a quick break.
Speaking of breaks, there was an instance in the second half when Jagielka steamed forward, laid it off to Saha and ran on between the CBs, only for Saha to pause, and play it wide. It really didn't pay off and I think the team has a tendency to not go with the momentum sometimes. We're not a team that plays on the break very well but we have chances to do it and it could work for us.

Easter Sunday. We were charitible and giving help to the afflicted.

(Or we were just Shat!!!)

I will be more than happy to elaborate with a decent match report.

But it will draw the conclusion:

We played shat!!!

For me, Yakubu and Bilyaletdinov have to start ahead of Saha and Cahill next game. Let Bilyaletdinov play Cahill's role for once, and let the Yak be fed. Saha needs a wake up call.

Our problem against teams who come to defend is that our build up play is far too slow and predictable. Far too often players such as Cahill and Saha will lay the ball off and run into the box to wait for a cross. Only Pienaar drives forward into the space and looks to get a shot in. The full backs need to vary their delivery too. Instead of always playing the high ball that goes over everyone's heads, why not put a low one across goal every now and then? We could really do with someone like Ashley Young or Theo Walcott to give us the option to counter attack with pace. Donovan gave us that dimension to a degree, but he too often drifted inside to try and get on the end of things rather than being the one creating them.

I think it's a problem generally. It's a cliché but defenders hate playing against pace, we'd be much stronger with some on the wing.

they're talking about it now on Talkshite.

'APPY 'ammers which from the sound of it, appears to be the result of their season.

I guess Zola after today, will be around until the end of season, hell, they might even give him a new contract on the back of today.

I must have a look at the league table.

We have the second least number of attempted dribbles in the entire league.

We are also [Poor language removed] in pressure situations, that's the most sickening thing about Everton I would say. It's also where we miss Mikel more than ever, our most reliable player by a country mile. Why the **** was Faubert running down our right hand side with no challenge? Because Baines had a 2v1 against him and had to wait for Pienaar to get back and help him. How can you possibly get in that situation when you've just scored a winning goal in the 85th minute. Things that we could have done instead: FOUL IN THEIR HALF, KICK THE BALL OUT OF THE GROUND, MAKE A SUBSTITUTION, PASS IT BACK TO THE KEEPER, DO ANYTHING BUT LET THEM HAVE AN ATTACK STRAIGHT AFTER YOU'VE SCORED.

We literally have no one in the entire squad with a cool head apart from Arteta.

I agree in that we should have tried to keep the ball after they scored. It must have been part of our heavy artillery game plan to cede posession. If you have the ball you have control.

Agreed, frustrating.

Fellaini will be welcomed back next season for that exact same cool head thing you just pointed out.

Cahil will not be dropped mate.

I'd really like someone to give me a good reason as to why he was first shunted to central mid in a 4-4-2 then put out on the right hand side.

As opposed to being subbed off and having players who can play well in those positions.
