I think Townsend has done ok actually. The key for me, is it's a 2 year deal and no transfer fee. I see him as similar to a Walcott in ability and attitude, but we spent 20 odd million and gave him a huge 5 year deal from memory.

Those sort of bridging players are useful like Townsend. You might say Longstaff is another.

We had loads under Smith and early Moyes, Carsley, Gemmill, Pembridge, Naysmith, Weir, Campbell etc. None of them world beaters, but lads brought in of decent character, for now fees who did ok for the club.

I’d like to see Gordon take over from him as a starter alongside Gray. Whilst I like Townsend’s attitude he’s not a top 6 quality player. A very good squad player to have around though. I just think given the low baseline we’re starting from that having players giving everything and working their hardest should be a minimum for every player.

I think we need to move away fron classing players as starters or squad players. The squad should be about eighteen players who rotate. Gordon and Townsend should get games.

Brands definitely did not see value in the January window and barely did deals. I can see why him and Benitez did not get along. Let’s hope we make use of this window, RB and a playmaker thanks. Keep Digne till the summer and sell then.
 
I have no problems with profile of Mykolenko (apart from the fact we should be strengthening other areas first). International, young, ambitious and his best years ahead of him and won’t be on massive wages. As opposed to 28-29 year old players who’ve failed at top clubs and command top wages with their best years behind them. We have a squad full of them.

Richarlison: 3 goals, 2 assists, in 888 minutes played over 11 games.

Townsend: 3 goals, 2 assist, in 1270 minutes played over 16 games.

Hasn't done more then Richarlison at all with alot more game time. By the end of the season Richarlison will be out of sight of townsends goal involvement.

Personally I hope they both have stormers all season but sense predicts Richarlison will come out the better.

He will have flashes of occasional brilliance in games, but lacks the quality to put in good performances on a consistent basis. He has a good attitude and works hard for the team. But if we have aspirations to challenge for European spots, he needs to be thought of as more of a squad player than a starter.

You're not supposed to get Prem-caliber starters on a free. We're going to have to apply some Band-Aids under present circumstances.

If we can find a way to plug the hole at RB and get some help in midfield (preferably not a player on Coutinho wages, even if Barca is apparently quoting all of 16 million pounds as the fee), we'll have at least added some quality and depth in our problem areas on a shoestring budget this season. Proper solutions to our problems are going to have to come one at a time once we have the cashflow.

We will target what we can afford.

To be honest, if we had replaced Sigurdssen, Delph and Iwobi with three Townsend type players this season, we would be miles better off. Townsend has done exactly what it says on the tin.

The trick is to make the actual money purchases add big value and the free signings fill in the gaps.
