Everton January 2022 Transfer Thread

We don't want to loose Johnstone at West Brom but we accepted couple of years back he would go at end of his contract. He a decent keeper, brilliant shot stopper but not the best on the line and his kicking pretty poor. this season he had to play as Sweeper too as The Manager favours playing such a high line.

Townsend is a decent premiership footballer, nothing more nothing less. He will have flashes of occasional brilliance in games, but lacks the quality to put in good performances on a consistent basis. He has a good attitude and works hard for the team. But if we have aspirations to challenge for European spots, he needs to be thought of as more of a squad player than a starter.
Exactly this, Townsend is a good solid squad player, he can step in and let nobody down, he has a great attitude and won’t rock the boat if he isn’t starting. However, he should not be seen as a first choice player and I don’t think, given our glaring lack of quality first choice players in many positions, that we should be looking to make more signings like him. We need to spend whatever we have on a decent right back and a bit of quality in midfield. Quality by the way, that doesn’t translate as Longstaff.

If you prioritise signing someone to go into the XI, in most cases you should have a squad option with the person who is being displaced by the new signing.

Obviously this is as long as they're good enough and their wages aren't inhibitive (we can't afford top wages on the bench) or is that too simple

Longstaff could be a shrewd acquisition who'll add to the wider squad, but for me we should be prioritising our precious resources on adding actual quality.

What's glaring for me is that the areas where we need to prioritise haven't really changed in a season or two, so we can't expect it to be fixed in a window or two.

Don't disagree, but the two things aren't mutually exclusive
They aren't mutually exclusive, no.

But my proposal fixes the long-term financial issues at the club and allows us to keep our best young players until we CHOOSE to sell them. Your proposal is to sell the best young player ASAP to pay for previous poor transfers...and then what? Repeat the cycle over again? That worked well with Rooney, Stones and Lukaku.

We will target what we can afford.

To be honest, if we had replaced Sigurdssen, Delph and Iwobi with three Townsend type players this season, we would be miles better off. Townsend has done exactly what it says on the tin.

The trick is to make the actual money purchases add big value and the free signings fill in the gaps.
In theory ye, but Delph doesn't and never has really started, iwobi is amongst the worst footballers that ever played for this club so replacing them two players with two free players is a no brainer really.

But if your talking first team, which Townsend has been since he's been here, we shouldn't be signing anymore players like him to go into the first team is what I'm saying

Yes well he would have as he was there longer, only did one season on loan at West Brom but scored 17 in 35 games so hardly a failure
Though who apart from WBA fans really remember his loan there, I followed football a lot at that point and only his hat trick against Man Utd springs to mind a lot will remember him at Everton, we brought him on to the level so the top teams wanted him not WBA.

I remember, thought he looked like a beast given his age.
