Everton January 2022 Transfer Thread

He's better than just about all our midfielders. If he is our 3rd best midfielder, he's going to be a 1st choice player.

My guess if Rafael will play a 541/532

This is what does my head in most - do you really think either of those is a good idea?

As default tactical setups go both are terrible - they might work away at a big club when half the team is injured, but not all the time.

It certainly reads like we are starting to be ruthless which is music to my ears.

The likes of Holgate, Kenny, Delph, Iwobi, he who can’t be named, and Tosun are all massive drains on the wage bill. Delph, the nameless one, Kenny, Delph and Tosun all leave in the summer thankfully but the money we’ve wasted on players that contribute nothing to the cause is terrifying!

Then there’s Gbamin. Now, I feel for the lad… his time here has been a disaster and that’s not his fault but since he’s been fit, he hasn’t featured. He’s clearly not good enough (whether he was pre-injury we’ll never know now but it’s the here and now that matters), he’s picked up well over 100 weeks’ worth of wages for only a handful of minutes on the pitch…. The man needs to go! No room for sentimentality.

Likewise I’d sell Davies, Gomes, and Mina if we got offers. In Mina’s case he’s our best CB but he can’t stay fit – his entire career here has been blighted with injuries so what’s the point of him being here and Gomes is in and out of the team and when he is fit, he has 1 good game in 5. Again, he simply isn’t good enough and as for Davies, he wouldn’t still be here if he wasn’t a local lad.

As for I’d say Longstaff I’d say he’s a better option than Gomes, Gbamin, Davies and Delph but there is an argument whether simply being better than our dross means he’s good enough for where we want to be.

Really don't think he's any better than Davies but being better than them isn't enough anyway. There is a whole world of players out there, limiting our signings to players Benitez liked at Newcastle, who are one of the few teams around worse than us, is very myopic.

He was exactly the type of player we should have been signing at the time - A position we needed, young, up and coming and powerful. He's had rotten luck with injuries so in hindsight it looks like a terrible signing

Out of all the crap signings we've made over the past 5 years, he's probably the one I feel most indifferent about - just a bad luck story
I dunno. 25m for an "up and coming" player from the Bundesliga where seemingly had no competition for his signing isn't exactly what I'd call an intelligent transfer strategy. If we're going down the up and coming route I'd sooner we look to the Championship and get players in from there; much more likely to be able to adapt to the Premier League and no worries about having to settle into a new country and culture, etc.

Complete untested.

He needs a run of games, get him loaned out or play him in a 3 man midfield and then assess him from there.

Untested in England, apparently he did play CB a bit for Mainz. But yeah, not what I would do. He doesn't look like he's in Benitez's plans so I would say loan him out somewhere to help the lad get his football career back on the move.
