Everton January 2022 Transfer Thread

Gbamin, would happily see us accept even something stupid like 5m for him. A truly miserable signing, as many here could have predicted at the time. Some no-mark from Germany for 25m. Only Everton could do something mad like that.

Delph, rightfully off at the end of the season, and isn't Sigurdsson out of contract too? Even though the latter clearly won't be seen in L4 again.

If we can offload Davies too, what with Baningame gone now too, that'll be an amazing five-some of awful players off the books.
He was exactly the type of player we should have been signing at the time - A position we needed, young, up and coming and powerful. He's had rotten luck with injuries so in hindsight it looks like a terrible signing

Out of all the crap signings we've made over the past 5 years, he's probably the one I feel most indifferent about - just a bad luck story

The new darling of GOT, David Moyes, is having the season of his life playing 4231.
I did mention West Ham in another post mate as one of the teams in this league that play 2 in midfield well.

But Moyes' West Ham have a number 10 in Fornals or Lanzini (last season Lingard) that dropped back into shape and they spring properly. They also have two brilliant midfielders in Soucek and Rice who a) cover a lot of ground at speed, b) can both carry the ball and c) are good in the tackle.

I’ve not said anyone is stupid. I said it’s bipolar behaviour.

It is black & white when you compare two different approaches to signings.

We either go for ageing or over the hill type signings on big wages/ and or big transfer fees. (Which is near on unanimous in terms of what frustrates us fans)

Or you take punts on young players with potential to improve. (Which nearly everything I read is that we never do this)

The only other profile signing I can think off is players in the 20-24 year old bracket thst are already household names, which we know right now we can neither afford or attract.
Its not black and white though is it thats obvious just by looking at the example we're talking about here. Digne was bought and gave us 3 or 4 years service and we're now hopefully selling at a profit thats fine isn't it. I keep seeing people say we never sign players with potential to improve but we do I listed a load of them earlier there are literally dozens of them since Moshiri came in the issue is that not all of them turn that potential into actual improvement and then people forget that it was ever a possibility in the first place. The important thing is to sign players who turn out to be good. A 28 year old who is your best player for 4 years is a good signing and so is a 20 year old who does a good job for a couple of years and gets sold at a profit. A player who comes in and bombs isn't a good signing whether they're 18 or 38. I'm happy with us signing the 2 full backs but I was happy with us signing Sandro Kean and Gbamin aswell so the proof will be in the pudding.

Gbamin criticism is very unfair.

People say 'Signing a player from Germany for 25m, Everton that'.

No, what would be very Everton would be letting him go for 8m and watch him hit the ground running at his next club because they actually gave him a couple of games to get back to match fitness.

We're going in for Longstaff when it may be very unnecessary and we could prioritize a CB this window.

Start Gbamin in a 3 man midfield against Hull... so we can assess fairly.

Honestly this place is utterly bipolar.

Everyone moans for years that we never sell a player for profit/ decent money.

That we should follow other clubs ‘success’ of player trading and/ or unearth some gems/ young players with potential

Thst we end up giving away ageing players who we spent decent money on for nothing.

Whether we like it or not (and I’d still prefer to keep our good players) in Digne we have a rare opportunity to do what most moan about on a daily basis.

Sell a player approaching 29 for a profit, and use the money to re invest in young/ hungry potential.

What’s the alternative? Sell for half his current value in a years time, or worst watch him naturally decline then moan about having yet another ageing player on the books on high wages we can’t shift?!

Make up your mind what you want
When it's longstaff we are bringing in, it's understandable.

He's better than just about all our midfielders. If he is our 3rd best midfielder, he's going to be a 1st choice player.

My guess if Rafael will play a 541/532
Lid, you know nothing. You regurgitate internet rumours without citing the source, acting like you have inside info. The Sean Longstaff / Lucas Digne Newcastle bid being the latest.

You have no inside knowledge of the club or what the owner will do.

You’re probably a fat Geordie who has a love in with this fat kopite because he stood up to Ashley

I totally agree it’s not black & white in terms of who improves/ turns out to be good vs who doesn’t.

I’m just talking about what recruitment approach we take, which by reading through the hundreds of comments per day is generally what dictates whether we are deemed to be a laughing stock or actually taking a sensible thought out approach to signings with a plan.
